ESPN: Those Guys Have All The Fun

If you haven't heard, there's a new book out today detailing the behind-the-scenes drama over the last few decades. A lot of what I've read and heard so far it's pretty interesting, with tales of excess and debauchery. Who's banging who and who's an asshole.

Anybody reading this now or plan on checking it out?

Yeah, the stuff on Deadspin is crazy. I think I'm gonna order it on amazon. We all knew Chris Berman was a dick, but I love the Simmons stuff and the Andrews/Beadle catfight.

I still remember the lunch when [executive vice presidents] John Walsh and Steve Anderson were deciding whether they were going to hire Keith. I said, "You're aware of his reputation, aren't you?" They said, "Oh, it's not going to be like that. He's not making all that much money." I said, "It's not a function of money. Know what you're buying." When he arrived, Keith had one thing in mind: It was Keith. That's fine. Nothing wrong with that.

I normally refuse to buy ebooks on Amazon that cost more than a physical copy of the book on principal. But the fact that this one is almost 800 pages makes me seriously reconsider this. I've been awaiting this book for months now since I first found out about it. If anybody likes SNL, these guys did a great oral history about that 8-10 years ago that is in this same style format.

I was watching the Dan Patrick show last Friday and he was discussing it for a while. The stuff he was talking about sounded really interesting.

Think I'm gonna pick this up for the summer and read a chapter every once and a while.

Yeah, Sage Steele is a cutie.

I think it's funny the story about the Matthew Barnaby-Michelle Beadle office romance.

She's from Baltimore, MD and did sports there before taking off to Bristol. I believe she was or still is married and had a child last year. SHe does look good and she has a perfect sports announcer's name.

It all makes sense considering how much ESPN has come to suck in the past 10-15 years.

Yeah, a lot of shitty guys in the fold now. And the Baseball Tonight crew has gone down since Gammons left.

It's fun to watch Skip debate on 1st and 10. He loves A-Rod and LeBron.

Baseball Tonight has suffered big time with Gammons gone. I've been liking the MLB Network a lot more lately.

Bobby Valentine? Seriously? As Fixer says, ESPN has become the TMZ of sports.

Stephen A. - couldn't believe that guy got paid to write "articles" in the Inquirer - then really couldn't believe he got paid to be on TV! What a jackass.

Flipped through in it in Barnes and Noble. It's a sequel to the Uncensored History book about ESPN that I read many years ago when I worked for an ignored division of the company.

bought this book at the airport for my flight back to philly on tuesday. 3 chapters into this beast (easy read though, so it's going quick). just starting to get good. was cool reading about how the station started...there was a ton of luck involved for those guys

I finished it last night. Parts of it are great, but it was a lot of talk about negotiating big deals with a bunch of people I didn't know. They should have had some kind of index or put who the people were by their name every time they talked because I could not keep them straight and ended up not caring enough to look back to see who was who.

That said, there were some fascinating parts. Overall I'd give it a B-/C+.

Yeah, it is hard to keep track of all these execs from when ESPN first started. I'm only up to about the late 1980s....only 500 pages more to go!

340 pages in and I'm not quite halfway through this thing. I'm enjoying it though. The story about Dan Patrick and the minor league manager was good stuff
