Sings it on Chicago I '06 as well. Pretty sure it was a reference to Johnny Ramone, although I'm not positive.
He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share, his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere.
  • That's the only John I've heard of as Ed's reference.
  • montreal 05 he says it. pretty sure eddie cried.

Definitely Johnny Ramones, did it in Verona 06 too and then dedicated Come Back to him, in the near-anniversary of his death.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Perhaps he got a "Dear John Letter".

I'm going to disagree with the Johnny Ramone guess.

Eddie sings "Oh dear John" during "Release" at the Mansfield (Boston) show in 1998 (six years before Johnny Ramone's death). So it has to be someone else...

DropTheLeash, you are correct - I was at this show, and it took place on the 1 yr anniversary of Johnny Ramone's passing. Ed was pretty somber (and if I recall, drank a little more wine than usual...) and I always felt he was singing about Johnny, too. I got chills when I first heard him say it that night (I'd never heard him do this before) and get chills when I hear it now.
