Ed says: "I don't know what else to say, what I can say is, if someone was hurt to the point where they didn't live after tonight. I don't think we'd ever play again, some bands they continue on, I wouldn't be able to do it. Music is not that important."

Pretty weird knowing what happens 4 years later :( Im glad they did not stop playing music though.

  • I was at that randalls show. I remember Ed saying that. The pit was raging and he stopped the show a few times. ed also Told the crowd in front they belong in the loony bin. It is a shame what happened years later but I guess the show must go on.

That day and that show was unbelievable...It was altogether an incredible experience. That was one of the craziest pits I've ever seen as well.

  • ah, memories......
that show kicked my 19 year old ass.
i left with bruises on my ribs, which i was so proud of.

the funniest thing about that show, is that i remember them playing Last Exit, and saying to my then-boyfriend "oh, this must be the end--great song to go out on!"
Now, this was my first PJ show, and before the days of setlists on the internet, so i had no clue that they played longer than other artists, and would play a marathon 3 hour set....most shows i'd seen ran about an hour and a half, so this felt right to me. And then they kept going, and going......Turns out Last Exit was about half way through the set.
    good shit.

  • I listened to my boot of that show a month or so ago only to realize that Jack Johnson plays on Soon Forget, which is cool since I am pretty sure JJ didn't have his own album out until four year later or so and Soon Forget didn't arrive until two albums after that tour.

Has to be one of the all time best shows I've ever attended.

Edit: I wonder if I just got a weird boot of that show though. Can anyone confirm if soon forget was played at Randall's with Jack Johnson?

  • My first PJ show ever...It took them many years to play a longer show...it will be sweet whenever they decide to play there again, count me in on that show.

Lol - no way dude. Made me laugh
Let me inform before the crazy police inform you harshly.

    1. While it is possible that soon forget was written before it's release on Binaural in 2000, and that EV and Jack Johnson were friends way back then.....No, JJ did not play Soon Forget at this show, nor was soon forget ever played prior to 2000.

    2. It's probably from some JJ show where he does cover the song...has done so on more than a few occasions.

    3. http://www.twofeetthick.com check out the concert chronology and enjoy :)

My fav part of this is where after you posted it, you had that moment of "wait a second..." and posted the edit. It reminds me of when you hear a crazy story as a kid and always believe it, and then one day as an adult you're telling the story out loud and have that revelation that changes your world. It's always a sad moment though, so I'm sorry. :(

I hope that doesn't set the next post up as that you are now a 28 year old ugly fat girl now?

hehe sorry - had to make the joke just based on your phrasing.

I was 14 years old at the time and kept getting crushed up front...had to get out a few songs in.

That pit was pretty bad and I do recall Ed getting quite pissed.. Honestly that is what happens when everyone pushes towards the stage as well. I lost one of my pant legs in there and had a pretty good sized bump on my head from hitting the ground.

Does anyone remember them shooting (water) Super soakers into the crowd that day? Not the band of course but I guess it would be the venue.
Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

If anyone has a good CD boot of this show I would love to get my hands on a copy. My copy was lost when my 1979 Buick Regal was stolen. Please PM me. Thanks!
  • This was my first PJ Show although I was listening to the band since 92. Absolutely amazing!! I have been hooked on PJ shows ever since. I was a senior in High school and I had never experienced anything like it! Raging pit 3 and a half hour set and crowd surfing hey days!

I know there's a DVD of the first night of Randall's Island but not sure about the second. It was a really wet and rainy as some of the posts I've read on this classic show.

There's a great FLAC of night 2 from My3rdEye's blog.

  • night 1 was the rainy night. (i wasn't there, but i know it didn't rain at the show i was at, 9/29)

Does anyone have a link to ANY video from this show? I searched youtube, and there's tons of '96 clips, but none i could find from this show.

Or, better yet, is THIS the show with a DVD, the non rainy night?

    Any info? Please?

was there anyone NOT at this show!?
  • I was there too. This was my first, favorite and most memorable Pearl Jam show. What I heard and experienced that night just blew my 16 yr old mind away. Pearl Jam was amazing. Ben Harper was amazing. I was already going with a good friend of mine, but was able to score a couple of more tix and bring another good friend along after they rereleased a bunch because of some scam or something.
  • That was my first show as well. Just after my 21st b'day, and though I was a pretty big fan at the time, I was hooked for life after that. How could you not be after 3 /12 hours and 35 or so songs? I recently played this boot again, great, great show, amazing crowd, just a perfect night, one I'll always remember.
Where do i go to soothe my head? Guess i'll turn on music instead.

honestly I have no clue. I assume that when I was surfing I kicked someone in the head with my DocMartins and pissed them off.. I can only assume that the tearing started then and by the time I left the "pit" (after Porch) I was soaked head to toe, missing a pant leg, had a big old bump on my head and still clutching my poster. Still the best show I was ever at.

I can still hear Eddie yelling at us:)

Oh and the first night was great also but for different reasons. The rain,Popper on stage it was just awesome. I had to have everyone I was with take their clothes and shoes off before getting into my girlfriends(now wife) car. She just got it that week and of course I was parked on the baseball field on 1st base. After the show it sunk about 1 foot into the mud.. haha goodtimes... like a 3/4 hour drive back to NJ cuz we got lost.

  • This was my FIRST show also, the second night, when it DIDN'T pour rain.
I was thinking that I was a fan of this band because I'd been listening to their frist two discs, but I'd never even heard them play live at all before ... this night changed my life.
25 shows later and I am so hooked thatI can never imagine stopping now...
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

I have a shitty boot of this show. It isn't great quailty, but sometimes I pop it in just to try to grab a piece of the energy of that night.

PJ had not played a big gig in NY at all since Ten came out. The people were starved for a PJ show. They hit the stage and it was like the friggin Beatles came to town, but instead of corny teen chics screaming there heads off, it was a mosh pit of angry grunge kids. I was in that pit with you all. I could write a novel about that day/night.

They've come close a bunch of times, but I have yet to see a better show.

When Roskilde happened I remembered what happened at Randall's Island and thought how lucky we all are that no one was killed that night.
    90 shows and counting...some of my favs: Randall's Island night 2, Milwaukee '95 night 2, Hawaii '06, St Johns '05, PJ20!
