really now? who says that there are not some crazy individuals out there who support these tea party candidates?

i am saddened to know that:

1. death threats and cyber harassment of a teenager seem to go unpunished

2. that Bachmann will not accept the challenge because this teenager would most likely win

Teen says she's received death threats after challenging tea party favorite to debate

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- A New Jersey teenager says she's received threats since challenging U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann to a debate over the Constitution.

Ann Myers challenged the tea party favorite in a letter dated April 29. After it started getting media attention last weekend, commenters on tea party websites have threatened to publish her home address and some have threatened violence.

The 16-year-old from Cherry Hill says several commenters have called her a "whore."

Her father, Wayne, says he's concerned for his daughter's safety.

But Cherry Hill Police Lt. William Kushina says anonymous online threats like these are usually empty.

Myers says the Minnesota congresswoman misstates or distorts facts about the Constitution. Bachmann's office told The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill that it won't respond to the debate challenge.

stories like these just prove to me that the "comment" feature on these internet news websites should be disabled, or at least moderated.

this is a debate. an intellectual exercise on the constitution. no excuse to threaten anyone over this. i think bachmann is afraid she would be exposed as the hack that she is.

This is why the 2 party system needs to be scraped...The world is not black and white with only 2 sides to every issue, however with 2 parties that is what we get- only 2 sides...so what happens...people start "rooting" for their side like they do their sports teams- fanatically. There should be no place for fanaticism in politics. Everyone needs to be independent and vote what their constituents want...not what a party line says. If that was the case then on Tuesday the US senate would not have let big oil keep $21 billion in tax breaks when they are putting up a record $900 billion in profits between the top 5 oil companies. 80% of the US people polled said that Shell, Exxon, etc should not get these tax breaks, especially given the current economic climate...but the senate did it anyway...they don't work for their constituents...they work for the highest bidder. Where you at Tea Party/Republican apologists??? Are you going to condone this tax break??? Of course you are...your "team" HAS to win at ALL COSTS, right?!?!?!?!?!?!

I was with you on this theory for a very long time .... and then I started reading the Canadian threads on their multi-dimensional party system! And I thought the U.S. political scene was a mess ....

I totally agree. We have some crazies on all sides of the fence in my town but I have to honestly say, it's the Tea Partiers I tend to shy away from the furthest. The fissures grow ever wider. It's too bad because I know a few Tea Partiers who are quite open to civil discussion. But would I attend of of the monthy Tea Party meeting here in town? No, honestly- I'd be too nervous.

This is why I can't understand death threats to someone challenging her. She actually has supporters out there???

Every candidate receives death threats, that Bachman probably has many lunatics following her, that may have nothing to do with it. The liberal media just likes to add to the craziness in an attempt to say they're not as bad.

Maybe, but who's toting more guns- tea partiers or left wingers? Who tends to be more violent- the radical right or the radical left (if there is such a thing anymore)?

Well, as the police officer said in the story, it's online threats, and they're usually hollow. Now are there probably some Tea Party members stupid/crazy enough to hurt somebody over something so silly? Maybe. But people just say shit on the internet, because they can. I got a death threat on YouTube for posting a negative comment on an Our Lady Peace video, doesn't mean I need to have detectives watching all inbound flights from Canada.

you didn't challenge an imbecile politician who has many supporters to a debate though. people take politics seriously. i would fear someone threatening me over politicial views more than i would fear someone who was mad at me for saying some band sucls ass...

My point was just that it's the internet, and people have a lot bigger bark than bite, regardless of what it is about. Yes people tend to take politics more seriously than music, but even so I had this clown saying he could get my IP Address and track me down. Crazy is crazy. As outraged as some Tea Party people might be, I don't think they would kill a teenage girl for simply offering a debate. People have insulted the Tea Party much worse than that, and to their faces, and I don't recall any Tea Party murderers as of yet. Yes they are stupid, but I'm not sure they're that stupid. And if they were going to go on a murderous rampage, I'm sure they have lots of other people they would rather kill than some teenage girl.

If somebody does do something to her, it's because they are flat out crazy, and politics is just an excuse. Much the same way that dude that threatened me probably had some underlying issue that wasn't related to Our Lady Peace.

Yes and as we all know, the Green Party is where the most respectable citizens maintain their blog comments...

Either that or this underlying issue has nothing to do with politics.
