Jim James working on solo album

Despite not even having his band's new record Circuital released yet, the My Morning Jacket frontman has apparently been putting the final touches on his debut solo effort. Jim James recently told the A.V. Club:

“I think it’s pretty different, but there’s obviously similarities, just because it’s my voice,” said James, who describes the album as “a comfortably lounging around the house thing, doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I just love playing all sorts of different instruments, so I just wanted to be able to do that, and mess around with whatever I wanted to."

To be exact, the Louisville musician also stated that he is "80 percent done" with the record. The LP is expected to drop early 2012. Circuital, MMJ's sixth studio album, will just have to hold you over til then. That album hit's stores May 31st via ATO.

Honestly a lot of the new MMJ album sounds like a solo album with backing musicians.

I like it anyway, but feel the band as a whole is underutilized.

wonder if this is the same one he was going to release about two years ago when if you went to his page to order his tribute to album of george harrison songs it advised a full length solo album would be released later that year, and then nothing ever came of it.

I very much see Backspacer as an EV album.
I'm kind of with you on that theory. There were 3-4 songs that could have easily been on Into the Wild. That may also be the case on prior PJ albums, but it really stands out on a 35 minute album.

It's really really good. Just an EP though.

Long Long Long, Behind That Locked Door, Love You To, My Sweet Lord, Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let it Roll), All Things Must Pass

His amazing voice shines through on these minimalist renditions of Harrison songs.

I thought it was pretty bad. The performances are so dull. Some of the tunes coulda been more lively to help elevate his voice, imo.

I love the slow version of Love You To (but I have heard from other people who think the complete opposite).
