Thought it wasn't a festival

edited May 2011 in The Porch
Didn't they say this wasn't going to be a festival type concert? Isn't a festival exactly what this is? What happened to just a few friends?

No problem. Just confused why they would say pj20 isn't going to be a festival when it clearly is

I get the feeling that this whole thing kind of "blossomed into one" the more and more they got into the logistics of planning it. From the beginning of the speculation that it was going to be Alpine Valley, it was kind of clear that there were A LOT of things to consider to make it happen there. I would imagine that making it work for the venue made it become a much bigger endeavor, and at that maybe that's when they decided it might as well become one.

most festivals dont have seating, so alpine valley is a weird venue for this event, their is not even enough seats for 10c people to get both nights reserved seating. lawn sucks at most any venue, some are worse than others, saratoga springs in ny is a natorious nightmare for lawn, when i saw pj there in 2000 i had 10c seats, and we went to lawn before set to smoke a blunt cause there was no security on the lawn part, and omfg their was like 100 things blocking the view from the stage, from railings blocking view, posts in the way etc etc. not sure how alpine is, i had seats when i was there, but i been to other amps on lawn for other shows like dmb etc and imo it always sucks, maybe i just like seats, or being close to the stage standing if their was no seats, lawns usually kind of suck especialy if it going to rain

except for the insider info of people saying they would play alpine months ago for the fest

i am almost shocked they did not book a football stadium or something like that for this event, i mean the best show i maybe ever saw pj play was state college pa they play till 1230am, not sure if it was outside in bryce jordan stadium or whatever it called if their would be a curfew like the arena inside, but my fuckin god that stadium holds 100k seats, and the field probably hold 10k people or atleast 5k? they could rope half the stadium off and still have more ticket sales ,that just example there is a shitload of places

what about the lolapalooza grounds outside of chicago does grant park? if their no seats their that would hold more than alpine id think? alpine at most holds 40k

Grant Park is huge but I also don't think that unless you're willing to sit there in the same spot since the gates open at 11 AM you're not going to get a decent view. Imagine being a whole football field away from the stage. That's what's going to happen most likely.

I decided that when I saw PJ at Lollapalooza in '07 that I would much rather walk around all day and enjoy the other bands then fight for 4 square feet of turf to stand on and risk dehydration, not eat, and resort to pissing in a bottle after I wrap a blanket around myself like some people did to hold a spot in front all day. I had a great time seeing Modest Mouse and especially Iggy Pop that day and I'm glad that I did.

IMO they couldn't have afforded to do this in Grant Park unless they made it a bigger 3 day show like Dave Matthews Band Caravan and got more acts involved. The logistics of setup, security, etc. to do it there are pretty significant since it's such a big open space. Remember, Lollapallooza is HUGE, and it takes in MANY more people then PJ20 would have garnered interest from. I just searched for info on attendance figures there and I found this:
Per the Chicago Sun-Times, this year’s Lollapalooza, which goes down on August 6 – 8, will expand from an 80 to 115 acre area in Grant Park. The Chicago Park District tells the Sun-Times that the western border for the festival will be moved past Columbus Drive and deeper into the park.

An expanded Lollapalooza means more people, and the daily attendance could jump by 20,000 attendees from 75,000, last year’s high, to 95,000. The expansion also means more revenue for the Chicago Park District, which receives 10.25 percent of the total $215 three-day passes sold.

95,000 people a day? There's no way in hell PJ would have attracted that large an audience. Like they said too, 115 acres! That's A LOT of space.

Could PJ sell 60,000 tickets? 80,000? Maybe. But not 100,000.

You have to remember that outside of the rabid fan base like us, there just isn't the same kind of main stream relevance for this band anymore. High School kids these days aren't listening to Pearl Jam like we did when they broke out, they're listening to Lady Gaga, rappers, Fall Out Boy, whatever. I also don't think we have as big of a counter culture crowd that Phish or DMB does to pull off something bigger.

While someplace like a football stadium might have been good, it just doesn't lend itself to a "festival atmosphere" like they eventually decided to create at this. One a football field you could have maybe put in one second stage in the back, unless you throw some stages out in the parking lot if it's a big enough facility to tailgate in in the first place.

I honestly feel that Alpine Valley fits the vibe of "Destination Weekend" to a T. The amphitheater and grounds within the gates are big enough to support multiple stages, vendors, etc. The parking lot outside is HUGE and the tailgating is amazing (plenty of people will probably spend the whole day out there til PJ is about to go on), and by doing this in "Bumblefuck, WI" the focus of the trip for most people will be THE SHOW, not catching a Yankee's game, or eating a Philly Cheesesteak, etc.

They've done multi-night stands at MSG, or the 4 days at The Spectrum, etc. This isn't an arena show. For all practical purposes it IS a festival, and accordingly Alpine Valley is a venue that suits it well.

i agree with everything you say, i thought maybe grant park be cheaper to rent though than the amp in alpine valley. grant park is probably a bad idea its too big

but what about like a college football stadium, sec and big 10 stadiums hold 100k people, you rope half the stadium off, put 5k-10k people on field probably, you can have the best half seats available in stadium plus football field, and that would hold 50 or 60k. i think pj is selling themselves a bit short on tickets for this pj 20 they probably dont give a shit, they have lots of $. but im sure alpine holds 40k at max, they could of picked a bigger place

im going to dmb caravan, im not a huge fan but my girl likes them, and i do like dmb live not as good as pj but they are a great live act, they picked an old air force base i believe for the event, its either that or an old airport private plane thing i forget, i think its an air force base thing they are using like other bands like phish have used in the past in was it vermont? i thought maybe pj would of picked a place like that instead.

festival= camping alot of times, alpine has no onsite camping right, they got camgrounds near by but its not the same, like reading festival in england etc etc, that shit is like woodstock.

That's how festivals are like in many parts of Canada. Especially here in Atlantic Canada. One stage, dozen of acts. We would call this a festival. 13 artists/performances on the same stage, performing on both nights? If it was 3-4 bands a night, I can understand. But so far look how many artists are on the bill plus more surprise acts? Plus there's a lawn/GA section? And it's all happening outdoors? Camping for this aswell? Don't know what to tell ya. :|

And one headliner & one set of performers repeating (as of now) the next day. So yes, it is a festival TYPE concert. Depending on your perception it could be whatever you want it to be.
What it is for me, is what it reads. 'Pearl Jam 20 years' celebration.

Obviously. I was more considering the difference between a concert and a festival (for me there is a big difference).. either could be a PJ celebration.
