Looking for Vancouver Advice

Hey everyone, just saw the setlist came out for the Canadian tour. My girlfriend and I are thinking about catching the show in Vancouver if we can.

We saw the show in Hartford last year and were a bit disappointed and taken aback by the area, nothing personal Hartford residents.

Any advice about Vancouver, places to go? places to stay? places to avoid? Any information specifically about the area around the Pacific Coliseum would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

- J

That is funny, the Coliseum is actually in Hastings Park and the transit site says to take the #14 Hastings bus to East Hasting and Renfrew.

When we visit Vancouver we like to hang out in Yaletown, on Granville Island and around English Bay. Your wife may enjoy these areas more than Wreck Beach. We also liked Caplilano Suspension Bridge and the Aquarium.

Are there any good brew pubs by the Coliseum?

So I'm assuming I shouldn't stay near the Coliseum? What would be the best part of town to stay in that would also be close to the show?

Wow I didn't even notice the show was at the Coliseum! That's great news! A little more intimate than GM place (Or whatever it's called now)

The coliseum isn't in the bad part of Hastings, but if you'll be in town for more than just the show, I wouldn't stay by the venue. The area is fine, but there's not really much to do around there. If you stay downtown you have easy access to Granville Island, Grouse Mountain, Stanley Park and lots of places to eat. If you stay by the Coliseum, it's only convenient for the concert, nothing else, unless your plans involve betting on horse races and riding a wooden roller coaster... which maybe they do, but there's a lot of nice places to see in Vancouver and almost everything is easy to get to from downtown.

*I don't mean to make it sound like the venue is way out of the way. It's about a 20-30 min bus ride from downtown.

Someone was telling me I HAVE TO go to Victoria island when I'm there. I was thinking about either flying in a day or two early or flying back a day or two late and then renting a car and taking the ferry, maybe staying there a night. I'm from Chicago and don't really go to the downtown here, I'd more like to see some of the things like mountains and the ocean that I can't see here, maybe even go snowboarding...

    Van locals... this plan feasible?

Not a Vancouver local...but we travel BC a lot! Ferry to Vancouver Island is 1.5 hours to cross the Strait...but the ferry terminals are a ways from downtown and the airport. You can catch a bus to the Tsawwassen ferry from the airport...so you might want to do Vancouver Island first. The Horseshoe Bay terminal is actually not hard to get to from the Coliseum, you just take the trans Canada highway to the terminal probably a 30-40 minute drive.
We prefer Victoria, over Nanaimo (these are the 2 cities on the Island that the ferries go to). In my opinion the ocean at Nanaimo is much like the ocean in Vancouver. I do not notice a difference unless I go to the West side of Vancouver Island(which is another 1.5 hour drive from Nanaimo). The beaches and waves in Nanaimo and Vancouver are nothing like the rugged west coast of the Island.
From the Ferry terminal in Schwartz Bay, you are 30 minutes to Victoria. Victoria is beautiful in September, it is a fave time to visit. But I think, unless you have 3-4 days to spend on the Island it is not worth it. I would say you need a car on the Island. You can go whale watching from Victoria, and the Inner Harbour is a cool place to hang out. The Royal BC Museum in Victoria is great (although I am not sure what special exhibits are there in September). There are also two cool castles in Victoria. Our Favourite is Hatley Castle, as it is surrounded by gardens, but Craigdarroch is nice too. The best Vancouver Island beaches are in Pacfic Rim National Park (1.5 Hours from Nanaimo), or along the Juan du Fuca Strait(40-60 minutes from Victoria).

You can have a fun Ocean experience in Vancouver. We like to stay in Yaletown, by False Creek, or West Vancouver, by English Bay. Both these places are by the ocean and beaches. Neither are close to the Coliseum...nothing nice seems to be by the venue. We are going to stay where we like and worry about transport to and from the show. There is an Ocean and Mountains. Grouse Mountain is okay. Capilano Suspension Bridge and Stanley Park both have enormous rainforest trees. The Vancouver Aquarium is great, and if you get to the touch tables you can pet a sea star. I love to view the aquariums that show the life below the Georgia Strait. No snowboarding though...not even in the Rockies, is there snow in September.

That's the beauty of Vancouver: From downtown you are walking distance to the ocean, and a short bus ride from the mountains. I've lived here all my life and I rarely go downtown either, but as far as the location that's the most central for getting places, that's it.

You could go to Victoria without a car if you're just doing a day or so, the bus from the ferry terminal on the island isn't much of a ride into the heart of the city. It's a good walking city.

Here are some other thoughts for your Vancouver trip ....

Like some of the other suggestions, do not stay near the venue (the Colisseum). There is not much happening around there. I would suggest staying downtown or False Creek or Kitsilano (or somewhere on the west side of town).

If the weather is good, you will want to hit up some of the waterfront - we have a seawall that extends all around False Creek and Stanley Park, which is great for a walking, bike riding, or roller blading. Granville Island is a must - the market has food vendors and craft vendors. The Island has restaurants and coffee shops and craft sellers. If the weather is good, try to have a meal on a patio somewhere. Bridges is my favourite for the sunset, but is usually very busy. At the other end (east) is Dockside restaurant / pub. It is quieter and also has a heated patio.

Other favourites are Stanley Park, just hanging out on a patio at a restaurant in Yaletown, visiting a farmer's market on the weekend, if you have a car going to the Capilano Suspension bridge ($$$) or the Lynn Canyon Suspension bridge (free).

If you are staying for a few days, and want to go to Vancouver Island (Victoria), take the ferry from Swartz Bay. You can either rent a car or take the bus (Pacific Coach) which picks people up at various hotels and spots in the City. The ferry ride passes through the Gulf Islands, which is a really scenic trip. Going from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo to Tofino is a LONG HAUL - i think it is too much for a day trip.

Check the airfares to Seattle - usually it is much cheaper to fly to/from Seattle to anywhere instead of to/from Vancouver. There is a bus (QuickShuttle or something like that) that will bring you from the airport to Vancouver downtown. Just a thought.

I'm from the greater Vancouver area and fully agree with those suggesting staying downtown and taking the bus or a $20.00 cab ride out to Pacific Coliseum. Also I think an amazing experience would be taking a sight seeing trip on a float plane or you can take a trip to Victoria.(by float plane). Check out Harbour Air for starters. They leave all day long right on the North edge of downtown Vancouver and land in Victoria harbour or many other destinations.
