the cage

Her eyes wide open, far too wide
Barely able to quell her simmering rage
She paces on diagonal for the extra six feet
this animal in a cage.

in the day too many can see, so she keeps it all inside
in the stealth of night she bellows and howls
haunches taut as she paces and prowls
crouching low to hide from the light

She finds some comfort by the night
darkness helps her hide the true age
she was when her sentence was passed
For time served in the cage

The moon she once loved now vexes her
waning and waxing and laughing in each phase
dark and fortunate clouds looming
will soon blanket her in their haze

half Indian-tigress ran free for too long and
by the still warm ashes of another empty page
It was pristinely crystalline clear to her how
she had built
her own fucking cage
fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

"what a long, strange trip it's been"
