when you heard Vedder's voice?

I was 4 in my dad's car on the way to a Mets game.. song was Alive. It was on 92.3 K-Rock here in New York.

How do I remember? I had a home video from inside the car because it was my first mets game and you can hear "Oh i, oh, Im still alive Hey, i, i, oh, Im still alive Hey i, oh, Im still alive" in the background... sadly that tape was lost...

    ...while weee were getting high?

I think I was at home or in the car, but like you, I was really young, probably 7 or 8 years old.

watching Mtv unplugged, well actually, I was flipping through channels, but the music and the greatness of Ed's voice had me in awe. After that I just remember they kept playing these awesome songs by Pearl jam on the radio, and the addiction and my love for the bands music just kicked in. Can't really explain why they are my favorite band prese, they just are. Seeing the band live however just adds a whole new world to the obsession with pearl jam. The live show is like an orgasm, yeah, I said it.

Can't remember how old I was but I think I heard Alive first on the radio and my sister was going, "This is the song I like!" I didn't pay too much attention until she got Touring Band for her birthday years later and made me watch it with her. Then I was like "Woah! I like these guys."
  • I was 11, '91, back seat of my best friend's dad's black pathfinder ... he was a young dad - early 30's - and he was an ex-stoner goof ass that liked to say "pull my finger" and fart a lot ... the next store neighbors had 2 kids in highschool, one of them was 18 and in a garage band ... and he had given my friends dad a tape of 5 or 6 songs that were on Ten ... this was like some sort of pre-release tape ... not really sure, but others here know what i'm talking about ... anyway, my friends dad put that on the tape deck in the pathfinder and cranked it. He said something like, "Nathan gave me this tape. Its some new band he said is gonna be big out of Seattle. I kinda like it. Its heavy but its not metal." ... something like that ... anyway

... i just remember us listening to it in the car and thinking that it was so different from anything else out at the time. Although to be honest it didn't really grab me until a year later when i got an actual CD copy of Ten, and listened to it with headphones, falling asleep against the window of a econovan, on the way back from a rockclimbing trip with a group from the local rock gym.

I woke up back at the gym, with this weird feeling, and i just thought, "Man i REALLY need to listen to that CD again... WHAT the HELL was that i just heard !??!"

    :D

17 years old in a Warehouse music store. I asked my girlfriend who they were and she said Pearl Jam -- "some heavy metal band."

Edit: To clarify, it was 1991 and the song was Even Flow, I think.

A month or so after Ten was released, I was giving a friend a ride home and he asked if I'd heard the new band that was formed with the members from Mother Love Bone (who was one of my fav bands at the time). He put the cassette in my car stereo and we ended up driving past his house and listening to the whole tape. I was blown away.

  • My first time hearing his voice was in concert.. It was 10/20/91 and Pearl Jam was opening for the Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers.. I was just there for the Chili Peppers and had never heard of the Pumpkins or Pearl Jam... When Ed stage dived on top of me and my friends I knew he was as crazy as me and I was hooked.. His voice and the songs they sang that night from Ten clinched the deal.. When I saw him climbing the rafters with his microphone and singing with one hand holding him from a 15 foot fall, I knew I was witnessing a rock n' roll revolution...........

Note: Timing on this may be a tad off, but for the most part ... this is pretty much how it went down.

Probably summer 1991 in my best friend's bad ass ........... black Geo Storm ... ha ...

A friend and I went to Strawberry's (New England record store back then) ... he listened to Rush ... that was it ... all Rush, all the time ... I was trying to get him into other stuff. He said, "You like good music .... get me something new that no one's heard of."

I had heard an interview with Kurt Cobain where he mentioned Pearl Jam and Mudhoney as bands he was recommending to folks on a local radio interview (WFNX ... this is Post 'Bleach', but Pre 'Nevermind' ... I think, maybe Nevermind had just come out ... but it wasn't nearly as huge as it would become).

I saw the tape, picked it out and gave it to my friend .... "here ... let's try this ... I heard some guy say these guys are good" .... (in case you didn't know, I picked out "Ten").

Indeed, I had never heard it either. So, we got in my friends car, popped the tape in and away we went ...............................

Before the end of Once, I had him turn the car around and I was back in Strawberry's, getting my own copy.

  • My first time was seeing them on Saturday Night Live in '92 when they played Alive and Porch. I was 9 at the time and was into a lot of good music thanks to my older brothers. To this day it was the most amazing musical performance I have ever seen on TV. My jaw dropped and I knew I had just seen something huge. It was kind of like my Beatles on Sullivan moment.

Fall of 91, driving to the beach to surf and the local radio station played "Alive" and the DJ was hyping the band as the next big grunge band. Over the next week, I must of heard the song 10-11 times on the same station and I went out and purchased "Ten" to see how the other songs sounded. Safe to say I was impressed.

  • I was 20 years old and still listening to hair metal. I remember my 17 year old sister Dee coming in to my room and saying "when you're done listening to this shit, come check out a real band on MTV Unplugged right now". I was hooked.

...and 16 years later, she's the one I'm taking with me to the Mansfield show.
  • I was 8 years old . One of my brothers was listening Ten , so from that moment I coudn't forget black and ED's voice....

  • puking in my college dorm room's toilet...heard Even Flow for the first time. Someone told me the name of the song and then I flushed the toilet. Next time the refrain came around, I started singing "Over Flow..."

Very stupid, not overly proud of this, but a true story nonetheless.
