Hi everyone,

To create awareness, I want to make sure all the Oakland fans out there know about the proposed budget cuts to your Oakland Public Library.

Under Mayor Quan's budget scenario A, all but 4 of the 19 public libraries in Oakland will close.

If you don't want this to happen, and believe Oakland deserves libraries, visit www.saveoaklandlibrary.org.

Thanks,
Derrick

my dad always told me growing up you can tell a lot about a city by checking out their libraries and I couldn't agree more. This is sad, hopefully they can find the budget solution in other ways.

One way to kill a city - Close the libraries.

So what's the Mayors reasoning behind this move? Where will all this extra money saved on closing these libraries go?

On the flip side, Oakland has access to this:

Currently, all City Employees pay 9% of their retirement benefits...except the police and fire departments. They pay 0%. So, basically, Oakland Libraries will close to fund benefits for the police and fire departments.

Thanks for posting this, Derrick. Though I'm three hours away now, I was born nearby in Albany and still have ties there. I'll pass the information along.

We've had similar issues in Placerville and the results have been disappointing.
