Random question "legal" about accepting "donations"

If i were to stand on the street and offer information- lets call it "advice" and it was a free service but people had the option to donate money, like $1- would that be illegal? Would I need a street-vendor permit to "conduct business"?

Basically I want to be able to offer tourists advice/information in busy parts of a major city but not really charge them, but let them donate.

What do ya think?

I don't know about legal or not...but it would be helpful. But the first thing I thought about, especially reading your first paragraph, was Lucy with her little psych booth in Charlie Brown.

it's the US, everyone needs a permit.

i doubt they would hassle you and i doubt you would make much money.

a better business venture might be selling phone batteries to tourists with dead phones.
