I'm new to the party. I've only heard Harvest...where should I go next? What is essential? What should I avoid?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Those two are essential. Also After The Gold Rush, Zuma, Comes A Time, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Ragged Glory and of course Rust Never Sleeps.
Thank you! I'll start with the essential and move on the the ones MysteryTrain listed in that order. It's hard to catch up when an artist has such a large discography. 33 studio albums according to Wikipedia so I have been overwhelmed!

Also avoid Landing on Water.
I recommend pretty much what everyone else is recommending. Make sure you check out the Live at Massey Hall '71 record. Killer live album.

e.t.a. Not sure if it's been said yet but I actually really like Neil's MTV Unplugged album. Another good one to check out.

Another idea is go with "Decade" and see what works for you in the first 10 years.

Neil has a lot of live stuff too, you need to check out live at massey hall. All acoustic neil and it's got a lot of songs that you might recognize (not sure how into him you are yet). Weld and rust never sleeps are also two live ones that are must haves, esp. for electric neil.
Once you go neil, you never go back.
Search out the 10 disc "A Perfect Echo" bootleg. Soundboard compilation of Neil tours over the years.

i realize it all comes down to personal preference but i thought le noise didn't even come close to greendale or living with war(for me)
and to the OP...i've been on board since mid 1980's and have come to realize that I'll never be "caught up"
>>>
Then the record that gave me my user name
>>>
Then EVERYTHING else (even the dodgy 80s records are worth hearing once!)
(Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)
“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
(Tim Rogers)
Both are much better than Harvest. I would then move on to Rust Never Sleeps. Once you have heard those about 25 times each you will be ready to move on to some more . Skip the 80s and early 2000s for a while. I wouldn't even blame you for skipping them altogether.
