When was the first time Ed played a guitar live with PJ?

I know Ed played a bit of guitar with Bad Radio, but I'm curious as to when he started breaking out and playing guitar with Pearl Jam live onstage. I remember him having a bash at My Generation at Newcastle Riverside, on Mike's Strat I think, in February 1992. And I've seen a clip of him playing Redemption Song at Roskilde 1992 on something that looks a bit like a Danelectro. It wasn't until the summer of 1993 and the first performances of Vs songs that I saw the black tele make an appearance. Someone's bound to know the answer to this one here. My reason for wanting to know? Purely idle curiosity.

Maybe a Gearhead would know, but I chanced The Porch. 8-)

I don't believe he played guitar on Porch during the Ten tour, but I think by the time Vs. came around he did on RVM and Small Town

The official song list on this site says that Better Man, Rearviewmirror, and Whipping were all debuted on 5-13-93, so it's likely that's the first show where Ed plays guitar. Small Town was debuted a month later.

I remember the first time I seen him play a guitar was on SNL in 1994, I think Not For You was the first song they played on that episode.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMJf2S-yRP0 I saw this live, so this is the first Ed guitar I witnessed. I'm wondering if some time between the OffRamp in October 1990 and the first European Ten Tour in February 1992, a guitar made an appearance.

didn't he play patriot at the 92 bridge school show?

i guess technically that wasn't "with" pj since he played it alone..
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam

Wasn't it when they played on Letterman or does that not count.

First time on Letterman was '96 when they played Hail, Hail right?

I don't know if we'll find anything that beats that '92 clip.

I may be thinking of SNL then for Vs.. They played rearviewmirror. I think that was the first time I saw him play guitar. I could be wrong though.

Yeah probably so. They played SNL in '94 and Ed was on guitar for Not For You and RVM.

It was daughter and Rearviewmirror that year though.

Not for you was when they played for Vitalogy.

They played Not For You, Daughter, and RVM that year. RVM didn't air on the broadcast. Not For You was played even though it was months before Vitalogy came out. This was all one episode, so there weren't separate shows for Vs. and Vitalogy. It was the week Cobain died - remember at the very end Ed showing the 'K' drawn over his heart during the closing credits? They didn't play SNL again after that until Avocado.

I'm pretty sure that RVM did appear on the original broadcast but is edited out of reruns for time.

That might be right. But they did play all 3 songs in the one episode. I believe it's the only time a musical guest has played 3 songs.

You are right except that all 3 aired(at least in Philly), because I just checked my old VCR tape and I have all 3 on that tape from when I recorded that SNL episode. I didn't realize that Not for You was that night as well until I looked. Regardless, that night was the first time I saw him play guitar.

That's right it is all starting to come back to me. I remember them being the first band to ever play 3 songs on one episode of SNL.

Yeah I have an old VHS of that show too. Don't have a VCR anymore though. That episode was amazing. Might be my favorite version of Not For You. Ed is so haunting that night. The Daughter tag was great too. You can see rehearsals on youtube also.

Yeah they for sure showed all 3 songs on the original broadcast. I remember being very excited that they played 3 songs when I was only expecting 2.

I could be mistaken but I think U2 and Paul McCartney have both played 3 songs in one episode since then. In fact, McCartney actually played four songs because he played 'Get Back' over the end credits.

I know U2 did. The played "I Will Follow" over the end credits. I'm sure you guys will call me a liar, but Bono did this thing where he looks down into the camera, brings it up and sexes the camera while he's looking right into it and the...PSSSHHH up in the air the camera goes while he yells.

Not the same episode, but also SNL... Rock for Michael was also a freakin' classic. Adam Sandler doing Ed was awesome.
