Nonobnoxious music that will make people want to dance

Hi there,

I am throwing my own 40th birthday party. It's going to be around 40 people, most of them have not seen each other for about 20 years (I am celebrating my 40th with friends from my 20s). I have the room for four hours. 8 to 10pm it will be eating, chatting, candle blowing etc. For that I have a cheerful, not too intense music background. After 10 I would like people to dance. Now, DJs are expensive, but it's not just that. Music is my life and I can't trust some guy or gal to put the latest obnoxious stuff on spin. So, I am trying to put together a list of songs that will make people want to dance, but that won't make me cringe. I have some REM, some U2, some Kings of Leon, White Stripes, Raconteurs. Can you guys think of anything else that might work?

Also, I can't mix. Is there software that will help with that? Then I only have to figure out how to connect my laptop to the place's stereo and I will be all set :)
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Have you heard of a plug-in called cross-fade in Winamp? Use this. Very good and easy. I used to use it when I was a DJ in a rock cafe-bar one year ago.

Thank you all so much for all the suggestions. I am getting really excited about this! And special thanks for the crossfade suggestion, brilliant! I had no idea :D . I may check out Winamp if I am bold enough (would I find it on my computer already?), but the Itunes feature is a nice starting point!

I added some New Pornographers, Idlewild, King Kahn, The Evening Rig, Fans by KOL, and I am going to incorporate your suggestions (jury's still out on Shakira and Lady Gaga ;) ). I need also need to crosscheck my list with non-PJ fans. I know *I* will dance around for Leash, Corduroy, etc., but not sure anyone else will :D

There are some pretty cool classic rock remixes out there, if ya look. I also like dance remixes to songs from indie bands. If these are too obnoxious, forgive me. Fun dance music is a guilty pleasure, dubstep/dance remixes are quite big with my friends right now and sure as hell fun to dance to at parties!

Can't Stop (Love + Light dubstep remix) by RHCP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDg5lPlvys4
Wouldn't It Be Nice (The Girls Can Hear Us remix) by The Beach Boys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MLqoiOcjYg

Come Back Home (Myd remix) by Two Door Cinema Club: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uCRhxp_Mgw

    Just a few suggestions! :)
Also: whoever suggested LCD Soundsystem & Ratatat- both are awesome!

:o:o:o:o:o YOU READ MY MIND!!!!!! I was reading all these different suggestions to make sure no one has suggested this and saw this down the bottom. Hands down, best song to dance to, especially because it just builds up and up. Awesome. P.S. I can't dance to save my life but still love dancing to it!:D:D:D:D:D
