Tattoos and Originality

So I dont have any tattoo's but its on my bucket list. As an artist, I view this quote by Rilke as pretty much the definition of why I plan to spend the rest of my days dedicated and immersed in my own art as well as others art

"Go into yourself. Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depths of your heart; confess to yourself whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple "I must", then build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life, even into its humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse. "

pretty much defines my life and destiny.

So the point is, seems like thats my MO right there, and i'd love to get part of that as a tattoo an abbreviated condensed version of it. But guess who also has the tattoo, in Rilke's native german nonetheless, Lady Gaga!

How do you feel about seeing a tattoo on the internet that someone already has, a friend, someone you dont know, a famous person, whoever, with a tattoo that you want, does it give you pause that someone else already has it? I guess if i got it in English it wouldnt be totally like Gaga's tattoo, but still...

I wouldn't recommend getting the same tattoo as Lady Gaga.

    Honestly??

Who the fuck cares, I wouldn't have known lady gaga even had it if the dude didn't say.

It's sounds to me like it's a quote that means a lot to him(or her, sorry not sure) so what does it matter who else has it.

I've seen a lot of tattoos in the pearl jam tattoo thread that are the same, and I've even seen a few people with "just breathe" tattoos and do you know who else has that?? Miley cyrus. Do you think the pearl jam fans who have the same tattoo as Hannah monfuckingtana give two shits?? I'm betting no. Means something different to each person.

who cares who else has the tattoo? not getting a tattoo just because someone else has it is stupid. just get whatever you want. besides, it's not like she's a nazi...

I guess I can finally get that barbed wire tattoo around my arm that I had been planning on getting until Pam Anderson ruined it for me

when you get that done, pictures please

if the tattoo means a lot to you, then get it done
it doesn't matter who else has it, it's what it means to you
how many people in the world will have the same tattoo - doesn't mean anything

if you really want to get it, just get it done and don't worry about anything else

    I was joking lol.
But I've seen people with tattoos of brand logos.
Adidas, Nike, Kappa, car companies etc.
I think tattoos should be something that means a lot to you, not some brand logo.

Monster energy drink seems to be the one I've seen lately. And footy teams, I'm not sure about people getting their footy teams logo.

    True, some teams fold haha.
I wouldn't even get a premiership tattoo if I was a member of the team.

Ha, a mate of mine was at the Anzac game and showed me a photo of a Collingwood fan with a massive tattoo of the cup on his back with black and white ribbons tied on the handle and such. That's a little nuts. Would he get a wooden spoon tat if they came last?

My personal opinion is who gives a fuck if someone else has it. Everyone gets a tattoo for different reasons, and what's important is what it symbolizes and means to you.

I have a tattoo that is flash...got it when tats weren't the fad. I wanted one because, 'chicks don't get tattoos', it was something different, and I didn't get the stupid 'tiny heart on my ankle' I went for a decent sized one and loved it.

I saw several other people with the same one thru the years, kinda fun to see how people incorporated theirs into bigger back pieces/sleeves. Gave them something to use as a conversation starter with me. Some of the pieces looked less detailed than mine, some smaller, some bigger. A friend of mine has the same design on his arm...and it's about half the size, and a different color scheme.

Get whatever you want, who really cares if it looks like "some famous person's tat"? If you like it, that's all that really matters. Unless you're getting a family member's portriat, you are likely to see a similar/vartiation of whatever tat you finally decide on. People who really appreciate tats are always looking at other peoples' tats and making mental notes in their head for design ideas....who was it that said "imitation is the truest sign of flattery"?
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

  • So yeah...

About this stickman on my leg... that's original right?

(At least it seemed that way in 1996  )
  • But for the record, I love seeing other people with the stickman. I'm even in band with a guy who had his long before we met and I've known others throughout my life with it. I like to think of us as a little cult. Okay, maybe a big cult but still...

i'd be hesitant to get something you know a lot of people have... but thats all a matter of opinion... i don't think its necessarily good or bad... besides, its not like you're getting "veritas" on your hand because you're some fratty douche boondock saints fan

and the gaga version actually looks pretty good

  • I absolutely love this quotation. It means a lot to me as well.

Who cares if someone has it? Who cares if she is famous and you may or may not like her?

It is a beautiful quotation, and if it means a lot to you, go for it.
    Well, fuckers, he still stands.
