I am a member of the IAM (international Aerospace and machinest union), I don't know what it's like in their local but our's is a currupt good ol' boys club headed by a "all for me" group of leaders as far as I can tell.
I'm very pro union but the way things are done in my local is shady to say the least and I think thier actions are hurting all union members but I also don't like all the out-sourcing of American job's either.

When I used to live in Atlanta, I laughed everytime I drove past the IBEW headquarters...a very visible good ol' boys network that supports its members, but doesn't care enough to change the word "Brotherhood" to be inclusive of its female dues-paying members.

Unions aren't preventing the out-sourcing of jobs. I believe their actions actually ENCOURAGE companies to look elsewhere.

your right they don't and they do, my union likes to keep lazy people employed, I've seen on many occacions people sleep at their work stations like it's alright, people that gossly abuse the attendance rules, people that just walk around and bullshit with people all day and a few of those are IBEW members it's no wonder companys like Boeing are pissed at the unions in aerospace.

I'm sure it IS amazing. I've always been fascinated :)

I would like to see what makes them go one day too. Physics is far from any of my academic strengths

Anyway..hope you work out your union thing. I've been a member of one or two useless and corrupt unions..and I've had the mind-opening experience of being a long-term member of the NEA...NJEA nonetheless..ha! talk about..well, you know  Very Powerful! But all about the talking heads for the most part. Although I have to say that as unions go, the NEA has done quite a bit for "society", even if a lot of us can't see eye to eye with it all.

Still, all in all, I believe that unions scare companies...esp smaller companies. Once they've committed they are pretty much at the mercy of the union. And in a small company I really don't know how much a union is going to do for the individual worker. In large corporations though, a union is just about a must. I hate to say it (you know me  ) but with all the lawyers and such associated with some of these megacorps, the little guy would be lost in the shuffle if not for the protection of the union.

So its 6 of one, half dozen of the other IMHO.

    Good luck Godfather. :)

I think I said that (currupt) and your question about my due's...well I get paid better than I would as a non union member (double just a bout)..do the math :o
and I am very aware about the control and curption in unions and I have voiced my opinions but I'll let you in a little secret and you may not believe it..some companys like large corps and the unions work together to help control labor disputs and other issues, unions can flex their musle and give millions to the dem's but at the end of the day or contract the unions only have the power large corps give them, I have seen large companys not ge-new a contract and go non union a year later, the unions can fight Boeing but they will only get what Boeing is willing to give, look what happened in Rockford Ill. at a aerospace facility there, I think it was 500 to 800 union workers out the door and that was after the union and city government offered a package of $8million and local tax breaks...the company said NO!

Then in your case you got nothing to complain about (if your making double)...I'd be making the same.

lukin2006, it's my sound bad but if their going to use me for all it's worth then I'm going to take advantage of what ever I can to support my family, the real bottom line as far as i can tell is that as a union member you're just a number on a long list of other union members, for instance when the company says we are laying off 200 union members then according to your sienority you might be one of the 200 and the union then prepares for that by increasing due's, they would rather lose 200 then the whole plant of union workers and hope for re-hires in the coming years, unions are a business just like the company's/plants they work for and as long as you keep that in mind you'll be fine.

I realize that...but the difference is the union is suppose to be different than the company...your not supposed to be a number to them...the company lays off based on seniority...my problem is the way unions conduct themselves, they spout off that they care about people, but in reality they are like the government, corporations and they see you a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

The unions are just hypocrites who have a whole bunch of people fooled...I'm not advocating for the abolishment of unions...I'm advocating that the union should need your signature to deduct dues off people's pay...if union membership was voluntary I'll guarantee you that they would get off their fat lazy ass's and start treating union members with proper respect and doing their job properly...if not then you can look at your union and say "FU your not getting any more money until you do your job right".

Unions leech off the productivity of others.

You know Godfather, I just find it sad that they take union members money to keep the laws tilted in their favour so us due paying members are screwed...it makes me laugh when union leadership bitches about government or corporations...unions, government or corporations are all the same, imo.
