    I would rank 'em:

    1- Plans
    2- Transatlanticism
    3- The Photo Album
    4- Narrow Stairs
5- We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes
    6- Something About Airplanes

All 6 are good albums. Plans is amazing on vinyl.

Other songs from EP's and such that you need are Photobooth, Song for Kelly Huckaby, All Is Full of Love (Bjork cover), Talking Like Turnstyles, and the Open Door EP.

Enjoy! They're on tour all summer it looks like - great live act! 8-)

  • depends on what sound you want. if you want more raw, and a little heavier sound, go for any of the albums pre 2003, so We Have the Facts, Songs about Airplanes, Photo Album, You can Play these songs with chords.

If you want a more polished and more mainstream sounding indie band, get any of the 3 most recent albums, Trans, Plans, or Narrow Stairs.

Transatlanticism and Plans changed my life.

^^^ Wow, San Francisco got the big F.U. for those tour dates, eh? ^^^

As for where to start, I'd say Transatlantacism or Photo Album.

I'm sorry I'm repeating it, but I cannot stress it enough, I said it in the last Death Cab thread, I *loathe* Plans. Awful commercial schlock ... by far their worst album for me. So glad Narrow Stairs was mostly a return to form.

Cool, got shut out of the Trocadero show.

Sad when I have to check if the Phils are in town when I look at concerts. Not because I'll miss a game, but hoping I'll miss the traffic!!

Yeah, Transatlanticism is the way to go Rog. I partially agree with jimed's assessment of Plans, but I happen to really like all those songs. Narrow Stairs is the shit too.

It might be fun to start with Something About Airplanes and work your way through chronologically. ;)

(although You Can Play These Songs With Chords was before that, but it was a Ben Gibbard demo tape, I believe.)

I would say kind of like Coldplay...but with really powerful lyrics and more complicated music...it's mostly acoustic/clean electric/piano driven music.

Sure, I guess that works. I like Coldplay, but Death Cab is vastly superior. Ben Gibbard sings in a natural voice, not a falsetto.

I finally sucked it up and paid for their fan club, since demand for tixx is getting pretty steep.

I completely agree about DCFC being superior...Coldplay was just the easiest comparison.

I am listening to "We Looked Like Giants" now...amazing song...got me out of my Muse phase temporarily.

Just ignore the Coldplay reference. I don't really see the similarity. It's not like they started after Coldplay or anything like that.

Lightness is absolutely fantastic ... so haunting with that odd feedback in the backround throughout the song.

The first 4 songs on this album are probably their best work to date.

But if you like the songs that are more "rock" ... you'll probably like "We Looked Like Giants" of Transatlanticsm.

So, it's safe to assume that all their stuff isn't like Lightness? I could be wrong because I've only heard it once, but it seemed a little too poppy for my taste

    Lightness ... poppy?

Probably not the term I would use to describe it.

Transatlanticism is a heavy heavy album. not in a hard rock kind of way.

    it's beautiful though
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Yes, the songs are very deep emotionally.

Title and Registration is extremely powerful. It takes a few listens before it really hits you.
