New Vinyl Question

A few of the records I have bought recently--OK Computer, Neon Bible, VS, Vit, Ten--are skipping quite a bit. And, the bass on them seems like it may be too much for my turntable and speakers. Now, I don't have state of the art equipment, but older records--my parents' records-play just fine (despite the fact that they are old).

Has anyone experienced similar problems with new vinyl? Is it possible that the needle is simply "finding the grooves"? Is this normal in any way?

Thanks
