discovering old music for the first time

I am embarrassed to say that I only heard the song Monkey Man by the Rolling Stones for the first time about a week ago... and it's so amazingly good that I have whipped myself to the point of fainting as punishment for not listening to it before now.

about 2 days ago I also discovered Nilsson Schmilson... it's magnificent...
I should have been a teenager in the 70s.. the music is so much better than the purified pop pish they bring out nowadays... plus in the 70s Simon Cowell was unheard of.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

"what a long, strange trip it's been"
Kind of an odd phenomenon for me as there are quite a few bands that I would probably be able to really get into but just haven't for some reason or other.
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22;
Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24
Tres Mtns - TLA 3/23/11; EV - Tower Theatre 6/25/11; Temple of the Dog - Tower Theatre 11/5/16
I could do to find me a internet 70s music station
only if the flares come in tartan.
It's an amazing album.
So wait...does this also mean you've never seen Goodfellas or did you just not realize what the music you were hearing was? "Monkey Man" is prominent in that film and if you haven't seen it, give yourself 10 more lashes with the whip and then run to the nearest video store and buy it pronto (along with Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, and definitely Bridges to Babylon
dude.. i know the film inside out. But i genuinely never realised that song was by the stones.
Just checking.
Bridges of Babylon is pretty good - Saint of Me is amazing.
See all the cool stuff we can expect from Pearl Jam in their geriatric years?

The "must have": Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street
But the top for me are Let It Bleed and Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! (with Midnight Rambler at the top)
I never appreciated Pink Floyd until I bought Dark Side on a whim....one straight listen through I was blown away
Dylan...never gave him much of a thought for the longest time....somewhere along the way I finally got it.
As for the Stones....my vote is divided evenly between Let It Bleed and Exile
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
Scorsese is a huge Stones fan. Evidenced by his frequent use of their music in his films, and also directing the "Shine A Light" documentary.
Scorsese is the shit.
The Stones are the shit.
Any questions?
6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)
9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1
9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2
Agree and agree although personally, I thought "Shine a Light" was shit.
Pink Floyd: you must listen to Ummagumma but also The Division Bell (I think you know The Wall)
I never saw it. I've been a Scorsese fan for a while, but recently in a film class it was required that we write a long, detailed essay on a auteur... naturally, I chose Marty. I watched a lot of films (excluding his huge list of documentary work) and solidified my love for his style and talent.
Like I said though, I've yet to watch any of his documentaries... I haven't even seen The Last Waltz which I really need to put an end to.

As much as I love The Rolling Stones, they are shells of their former selves.
I haven't seen them, so I can't say whether they're still good live or if they're terrible...
but, I've seen videos...

Rock N' Roll Animal by Lou Reed- Some really amazing guitar work on this live album.
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys- brilliant, enough said

The reason I didn't like it is that it really isn't much of a documentary. It's basically just a concert film that happens to have Scorcese in the director's chair. The performance is sub par because as has been mentioned, The Stones are finally starting to show their age live. I would have rather seen more behind the scenes stuff (especially with Marty at the helm) but sadly was hugely disappointed. Oh well, still doesn't take anything away from Scorcese or The Stones.
