HMV DEC 1994 FIRST LISTEN-VITALOGY

With all the PJ 20 events/releases going on especially Vs/Vitalogy reissue, my mind was cast back to December in 1994. HMV in Dublin put on tour buses from pick up points around Dublin. We got on board at 6.30am outside our local cinema. We were given a shoulder bag full of goodies, including a t-shirt, which was black and had the print of the lyrics from STBC from the album inlay (which i still have), and loads of other mad items. Got to the store around 7.30am and I always remember Corduroy was blasting out of the speakers when we arrived. (Remember no net back then and certainly no leaks). They played the album again as we bought our copy.

So back on the bus, home, into school uniform and on to school for 10am, excuse note in hand signed.


I was wondering if any other people attended this or any other first listen party for Vitalogy back in 94??.

I was there! There was also a promo poster and a pot of jam in the goodie bag. I still have the poster, but not the jam...

Got there around 6am - I think Whipping was playing when I went in, & I knew it from the Atlanta bootleg (though I still thought it was called "Would Be", as the boot cover called it!) so I was able to sing along.

It was one of the first CDs I'd ever bought - I'd actually just bought a CD player in anticipation of Vitalogy coming out. I remember going to the counter & the guy asking "Tape or CD?" & being so thrilled to be able to say "CD!" I took the bus all the way home, even though I had to go to college & would have to get the bus all the way back again in a couple of hours. I put it on, lay on my bed and pored over the booklet... and then put it on again, straight away, and it floored me - everything about it, every detail of the artwork and the music - right down to that eerie silence at the end of Stupid Mop. I don't think I paid much attention at college that day - just couldn't wait to get home to listen again.

It's quite probably my most treasured music-buying memory. Thanks for resurrecting it!

Hahahhaha, sweet. Forgot about the pot of Jam. And also now i remember there was razors in the bag too (WTF?!?!). I had to buy it on tape, which was fine apart from the inlay booklet, which was really small.
