Record Player Recommendations

Hey all

I'm looking to purchase my 1st record player next week. My budget is likely to be round the £100/$160 mark. Give or take.

So I what I'm looking for is a bit of advice/recommendations from the vinyl experts on here!!

This is a record player I'm looking at (well similar in design, but alot cheaper!!)

    unless you need all that extra stuff like the CD player, speakers ect . that is not what you want at all .

    A poor choice then?!! I'm a novice in this, I've had a look around and on the internet but am not sure what would be best to get and what to avoid

    Yes a very poor choice and I would not pay £262.00 ($427.57) for a product like that which will end up giving me problems. jokertt's link is a better choice and maybe you could pick up a second hand solid state turntable like technics for around £100 - £150 :)

    I like a direct drive TT compared to a belt driven one. Especially if you buy it used that belt may need to be replaced.

    I'm going to add to this thread as well instead of making another similar thread.

    I've got my eye on this player:

    My question is will I need a receiver to hook this up to? I'm really hoping to just hook it to the line in of my sound card on my pc without any extra hookup. Maybe I should be looking for a USB turntable for that?

    Agree with pro about looking for a good secondary player. I would also suggest that you be patient, save your money and go with a reliable brand.

    Those Sony models really arent much of an upgrade either. There are several threads on player suggestions if you do a search.

    Don't get this one! I just did and am about to send it back. There is no speed adjustment to fine tune the rpm, so mine constantly sounds like it's a spinning too slow.

    Thank you. I figured that was that case I just wanted to make sure. The reason I want to hook up to my pc is because that's where my best speakers are actually. Thanks to years of poodcasting I have a pretty nice audio setup on my desktop.

    Oh Hell if i would have know the conversion rate i could have found better turntables . Just those all in ones suck . there for the look really nothing else . flat out junk !! lol ;)

    I'll make this short and sweet. Don't waste money! If you're on a budget there are essentially 2 tables to look at. I would not go cheaper and we all know that for a little more money you can get something better. But, for starters getting into vinyl either get:

    1. Rega P1
    2. Pro-ject Debut III

    $450.00, imo a bit pricey for "beginners."

    Then listen to CDs if that is to much money. Perfect for beginners :roll:

    If you're really going to listen and I mean listen not just play records, don't go cheaper than that. The moral to the story is this; In order to realize the benifits of listening to records, there are certain things in a tonearm, cartridge, stylus, platter, motor, etc that you can not get from cheaper turntables. If you can't afford it yet, save your money until you do. Otherwise your only playing the records.

    I totally agree with the Pro-ject and Rega's are the way to go. Also look at Music Hall as they are made by Pro-Ject. Spend the extra money it is so worth it. It a must that they have RCA outs and not a hard wired cables so you can up grade your cables as needed. Anyone looking for a great amp Creek is the way to go for SST and Cayin for tubes.
