Ha sido una negociación de larga data. De esas que sólo se tienen con los peces gordos y los créditos a gran escala. Pero, en las últimas semanas, ya se cerró un acuerdo para lo que asoma como una de las mayores visitas de 2011 y como seguro candidato a trepar entre los mejores momentos en vivo de la temporada local: el retorno de Pearl Jam a Sudamérica, tras el recordado paso de 2005 que los tuvo por partida doble en el estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo.

La señal más evidente vino a principios de mes, cuando Fernando Moya, director del área de entretenimientos de la filial argentina de Time for Fun (T4F) -productora de alcance regional que también funciona en Chile- contó al diario El Cronista que el conjunto ya pactó un nuevo tour sudamericano para septiembre. Además, reveló que tiene tres fechas tomadas en el estadio River Plate, de Buenos Aires, para asegurar el paso del quinteto.

En Chile, la misma empresa ya acordó el retorno de los hombres de Jeremy para fines de septiembre y también en un recinto a gran escala, aunque aún no hay informaciones oficiales. Las dos opciones que se manejan son el Estadio Nacional y el Monumental, por lo que el plan es reunir a cerca de 50 mil personas. Una meta altamente probable: en cada uno de sus conciertos de hace seis años, Pearl Jam juntó a cerca de 25 mil fans.

Se estima que la segunda vez en la capital del conjunto -al igual que todas sus coordenadas básicas- se oficializará durante mayo. Hasta el momento, el recorrido por el continente también incluye paradas en Brasil y Perú. Las negociaciones para el periplo comenzaron en 2009 y estuvieron a un paso de concretar un par de recitales para el año posterior. Pero el matrimonio de su cantante y rostro principal, Eddie Vedder -en septiembre de 2010 y con la modelo Jill McCormick-, y la sobrecargada agenda que el grupo alistaba por esos días abortó el proyecto.

Es que la vuelta del quinteto al sur coincide con una de sus eras más prolíficas. Un ajuste interno de piezas que mira hacia el pasado, pero con clara intención futura. Durante 2011, uno de los emblemas del sonido grunge celebra 20 años desde su formación definitiva, y desde la salida del esencial Ten (1991), con una serie de anuncios y lanzamientos. El pasado 17 de enero estrenaron Live on ten legs, una recopilación que recoge 18 temas en vivo grabados durante las giras realizadas entre 2003 y 2010. y que fueron remezclados y remasterizados por su histórico ingeniero de sonido, Brett Eliason. Además, a fines de marzo lanzaron una reedición de lujo de su segundo y tercer álbumes, Vs. (1993) y Vitalogy (1994). La fiesta también tendrá un sustrato audiovisual: para mediados de año está considerado el estreno de Pearl Jam Twenty, documental de Cameron Crowe (Casi famosos) acerca del grupo, que contará con su propia banda sonora. ¿Más? Según contó a Billboard el bajista Jeff Ament, durante abril se encerrarán a grabar un nuevo trabajo, para el que ya tienen 12 a 15 canciones y que vería la luz a mediados de año.

Pero el proyecto más llamativo recae en el propio Eddie Vedder. El intérprete editará el próximo 31 de mayo su segunda aventura solista -luego del aclamado soundtrack de Into the wild (2007), que funcionó como debut fuera del conjunto- y que bautizó como Ukelele Songs. El título es claro: se trata de una colección de composiciones propias y versiones ajenas tocadas con el instrumento de cuerdas pulsadas y que es tradicional de sitios como Hawaii. Su primer single, Longing to belong, ya está disponible y circula por la web. El proyecto cuenta con las colaboraciones de Glen Hansard y la cantautora Cat Power.

Además, el trabajo incluirá un DVD que inmortaliza el concierto que el artista dio en agosto de 2008 en el Warner Theatre de Washington, mientras presentaba su primera aventura en solitario. En el registro se mezclan composiciones solistas y algunos himnos de su banda madre.

Obviously the Canadian tour and the South American tour both can't take place in September. I'm thinking the SA tour will take place in November as originally rumored.

I hope it becomes true. Cos we are waiting for a long time another PJ show.
BTW, the translation of the article it's really good. La Tercera is one of the more important newspaper in Chile, so the info they publish has a lot of research behind.
