I have an Ibanez acoustic/electric that's pretty decent. If you search on Amazon.com for "ibanez acoustic guitar" the first one listed is only priced at $96 which isn't bad for a beginner, but you might want to raise your budget if you want something of quality! My Alverez acoustic is great, and they start around $200. I hope that helps! Goodluck!

I've been wanting to learn how to play for awhile now. Any advice on a decent beginner brand and how much I should expect to pay for a used one? I don't have much money, but this is something that I've been wanting to do for awhile now. Thanks!

yeah dude.... just go to musicians friend and you'll find decent starter acoustics from 99 to 149. i think there was a ibanez for $99 with a free bag recently...
  • all of these are good suggestions. just be sure someone teaches you how to tune the thing properly though. there is nothing more frustrating about trying to learn on a guitar that is out of tune. good luck!

Yeah, I was looking at this one yesterday. I'm about to head out to the Pawn shops and a couple of the local music stores to see what they have first, before I buy something new. So this is a decent guitar?

When purchasing a used guitar, be sure to bring a good tuner with you, and check the intonation... play each string open and at the 12th fret... if they are all in tune, you are in business... if each string is out of tune (at the 12th fret) by the same degree, you can have the neck asjusted... if different strings are out of tune (at the 12th fret) by different degrees, don't buy that guitar....

But remember, the beginning is very hard.
Just continue practicing, every single day, on and on and on! :)
And it becomes easier and easier!

Get ready for numb finger tips! I picked up my guitar for the first time in ages yesterday and my fingers are still a bit tender. It doesn't take long to break them in. I would suggest buying an electronic tuner.

Yeah, it comes with a tuner, but a couple of the reviews say that it is trash, so I'll probably have to pick another one up.

when i first started i played a lot of drop d songs just to get a feel for strumming and not being so frustrated. i used tool's lateralus and undertow to get started.

for me the best thing to do was practice songs i liked that used basic open chords. for PJ try black, small town and betterman. good songs for learning chords D, C, A, G, E, Em and C/G.

and justinguitar.com is awesome of course
