Words you didn't know until listening to Pearl Jam

Dissident
Gremmie

Where any other people here ignorant to the meaning of words, or words in general, until hearing them in some form from Pearl Jam?

The first time I listened to Dissident when I got Vs. I pulled out a Dictionary to find what it meant. Gremmie I just sort of assumed it meant some sort of nooby surfer.

So thank you Pearl Jam for expanding my vocabulary! :D

EDIT: I'll ad Id onto that list. Thanks randomhero_204!

  • Id as in I got Id....

Id- –noun Psychoanalysis. the part of the psyche, residing in the unconscious, that is the source of instinctive impulses that seek satisfaction in accordance with the pleasure principle and are modified by the ego and the superego before they are given overt expression.

    Too accessible one might argue.

Sear, at least in that context.

    Tincture definitely.

many, many words. English is not my mother language, as U can see.

But definitely - I learn really much from Them. I've always learnt more english words from lyrics. Funny, when I try to remind one - I have to sing a song, which included this word to find it:)

BTW. In school it was soo fantastic, when sometimes I "flashed " my knowledge of some words, when others didn't know them (i.e. immortality, indifference, dissident)

English must be a bitch to learn.

I can never get into music with singing in a different language. Even if the band itself is really good. :(
So to those of you who English is not your first language, I salute you!

  • Great thread. I think about this question a lot actually. In the early years, I learned a lot of words from PJ lyrics including:

    Abducted
    Nemesis
    Dissident
    Id
    Decadence (TOTD technically)
    pretext
    kindred
