What can people tell me?
Read a post bout Jack Irons in Eleven and discovered Alain was in Eleven.
Did some research and turns out he has been everywhere with bands I love; QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, Live, Chris Cornell, etc.; without me knowing.
Whats the best Eleven stuff to get into???
I had it all once I gave it back

I saw him live with Gogol Bordello last December. Very good artist. I would recommend you to start with http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1436659/a/Thunk.htm. Highlights: 1) Nature Wants To Kill Me, 2) Seasick Of You and 3) Kneeling On One Knee. Enjoy! :)

Just digging into this guy's material myself

Get his recently released solo album. Mellow, but such a unique cool sound.

As for Eleven, Thunk has a pretty cool sound to it.

The guy must have a hard on for Jimmy Page. I hear a huge Zep influence in almost everything I've listened to involving him.
  • Get his solo album 'Spark'

It was written in tribute to his wife and band mate who died a couple of years ago (She was in Eleven and did Euphoria Morning and QOTSA etc)

Only Eleven album I've heard is 'Howling Book' and it's pretty good but 'Thunk' seems to be their highest rated.

eleven's self titled has some of his best guitar stuff IMO

they all have a similar vibe tho... good stuff... get it all... there's a reason jack left us to go over to them :D

I love the cover they did of "stone cold crazy" with josh homme too

Eleven is great. Self titled and Thunk are definitely my faves. Very unique band I think.

Eleven's self titled release and Thunk are seriously engaging. Also check out Alain (along with Jack Irons and Mrs. Josh Homme) in Spinnerette, 'tis good.

His solo outing, Spark, is sorta sad, but beautiful.

Not a knock on the guy at all. He sounds like Jimmy Page, with a modern spin in all the best ways. Usually when someone says such and such band was influenced by Zeppelin it's kinduva a very loose influence, ya know riff rock and power ballads and the like. Johannes take the Page influence and weaves deep it into the body of the song.

This is gonna sound kinda crazy, but I think he's as responsible for the Zep influence on the TCV album as JPJ is.

Did Johannes not play on the TCV album? I know he toured with them.

He engineered and played on a handful of tracks. He really made that stuff come to life live. They didn't have to skip over all the extra tidbits that really made the album.

The solo album is outstanding. It is really short, but great. Thunk and Howling Book are great, but their other three albums are solid too. I really like Avantgardedog, but I haven't really met or talked with anyone else who does.

I also read that he is working with Mark Lanegan on Lanegan's next solo album, which would officially make my head explode.

He worked with Lanegan on Bubblegum so it's a good match up.

i've always thought the music on chris cornell's euphoria morning was like nothing i've ever heard...took beautiful jazz/blues influenced sounds and put an incredibly unique psychedelic otherwordly twist on it. mix that with cornell's vocals and songwriting and you got yourself a masterpiece. this album is what made me realize alain johannes is a sickkk musician and i discovered some eleven. very cool.

He came out of the same scene as the RHCPs in the early 80s at Fairfax High School. A few years later, future members of GnR and LA Guns played in bands at Fairfax, as did future members of NOFX and The Wallflowers.

I am happy to have been there!

I ran into him after the Foo Fighters secret show at the Troubadour back in February. Such a great guy. I commented that I really loved his solo album and he stopped and chatted with me for about 5 minutes. He mentioned the perils of touring "Spark" and how he had been spending a lot of time in the studio with Mark Lanegan, among others. He then asked all me, how I had liked the show and what others inhad seen. It was a really cool moment. Recently, I went and saw him play live at a Rhino Records pop-up store (having previously seen him in QOTSA, TCV, and opening solo)and it was brilliant. He again mentioned how he hadn't played live in a while because he was producing his friends, Lanegan among them. He said, "Wait until you hear the Lanegan stuff," with a huge smile on his face. Can't wait.
Love "Spark" and it's towards the top of my favorites this year.
