Does any one here have any love for the Whale Song?

I know it's kind of an obscure song, but I like it. It's got an amazing guitar solo! (I'm assuming that's Mike McCready, right?)

I have love for The Whale Song. Believe it or not, I've probably listened to it more times many that I have Better Man and Small Town combined.

Unfortunately, I have to place it on my list of true throw-away songs. It's just... bad.

we love jack irons, we do.
  • I love Jack as a drummer, but as a lyricist & singer... :?

The music for Whale Song is great, particularly the Ebow. But it's down there with Sweet Lew for having the most banal, twee, cringe-inducing lyrics in the whole catalogue. Nice sentiment, though.

i can see it in my own head, the whale who refuses to throw a punch no matter the situation as they have too much love for everything/one, pretty moving in my opinion

Very underrated song. Thumbs up Jack!

I love it. More for the lyrics than the music. The lyrics sum up how I look at animals in general: with awe and respect.

This is a great song, mostly due to the lyrics and its message. I love this song.

I agree. I used to not pay too much attention to it, but it was on my mp3 payer when I went for a jog once, and I have loved it ever since. Its kinda an odd song, but its fun too.

There are many instances of whales "fighting back" or on some occasions just attacking ships for no reason. Although after being hunted the way they have, I guess even if one particular ship doesn't provoke that whale there is a "reason" behind it, so I don't blame them too much. The most famous whale attack was the attack on the Essex, an incident that turned several of the survivors into cannibals during the ordeal afterwards, and it was the incident that inspired Moby Dick. The Essex wasn't exactly minding its own business though, as they were hunting a pod of sperm whales.

So when I've heard the line "They won't fight back. I'm sure they know how. Beings that love are too proud." it always struck me as kind of strange. I get what Jack was trying to say though, and his heart was in the right place.

  • I have been fortunate in my life to see a few different times Grey Whales Swimming in the Ocean near the Farallon Islands, 26 miles past the Golden Gate in San Francisco. They are beautiful, majestic Mammals. Pearl Jam (Jack) wrote a beautiful song, paying honor to Whales and Our Oceans. I love this song! Thank you Pearl Jam for caring.

Ha, yeah sure....The time and place to play it was when Ed said OTOTO at the Hartford Civic Center last year (former home of the Whalers, current home the of CT Whale), as they once played Rats for the River Rats in Albany.
