I'm heading to the Big Island Hawaii in a couple of weeks and thought I'd ask the Jamily for some recommendations. Must sees, best beaches, best kept secrets, you name it. Unfortuantely it's a shorter trip, only 3 full days to explore.

Thanks!

probably have better luck on the AET ...

however since you asked: the big island basically has a wet side (hilo) and a dry side (kona) ... it's a pretty big island so depending on where you are staying - you need to factor in drive times ...

i don't think the beaches are as good as other islands for going in the water on the big island ... so, my highlights would be

    * volcano national park ... there is a hike you do that a lot of people do at sunset to catch the lava flow at nite ...
    * the observatory on mauna kea ... even if it's cloudy - the observatory is often above the clouds and you get a great look at stars at nite
    * akaka falls ... short walk to the falls ...
    * lots of great courses on the kona side if you play ... pretty steep tho ...

Snorkeling! There is a good snorkeling beach about 30 minutes south of Kona ... can't remember the name, though. It's near a state park that starts with a "P" and has about 183 vowels in it.
