HELP!! I have a question, where do I report and change when they fuck up your voting preferences? My hubby and I have always voted English-separate, and at the last election they had him as French-separate. :wtf: We are in Ontario and have always paid our taxes to eng-sep, so we don't know how that even got changed. He is French-Canadian, but I don't know why that has bearing now. Who do we go to correct it before the upcoming election?
Lots of love, light and hugs to you all!

  • Hmmm, I think that's a US thing, originated in Florida around 2004. You see how that turned out for us!

Vancouver chiming in with confusion… What the heck is "English-separate" and "French-separate"? Just your voting language of choice? Or does it send him to a different polling station or something?

I know!! He was blind-sided at the polling station and voted based on party... :x He knew all the platforms for the English constituents. They would not let him correct it there either. I wonder how many others have had this happen in Ontario...

Woooody, yes, what school board your taxes are linked to determines what wards you get to vote in. That's why I can't understand what happened... :x someone told me it was illegal to have two different wards in the same house...we just don't know where to go and rectify this...

He has always been at the same polling station & ward as me, but this was the first time ever that he was told to vote for French constituents in that ward & polling station...something is very fishy

unless I have the understanding of taxes & wards & voting wrong... :? see I obviously need some help here...

I'm confused but...is that solely for a provincial election? They're the ones funding the schools.

yes, it was our last provincial...never happened to us before, as our household is under English-Separate...he just doesn't want to get screwed in the next election...seems all wrong

Then I suspect it won't matter on May 2? You guys go to the provincial polls in the fall I think, plenty of time to sort it out.

Thank you, that's very helpful. Now to find out how to rectify it before the provincials.

EDIT: I was using the word "constituents" by mistake, I meant "candidates". My bad, sorry.

Sounds like you are talking about your education taxes...if you contact your municple office, mp or mpp they will help you get it changed or direct you to the right area. Hope this helps.

In Ontario, it's part of your property taxes. It's to decide to which school board your taxes support. English-Separate, English-Public, French-Separate, or French-Public are the choices. You pick the board according to where your children go (or will go to). If you don't have kids, people choose based on where they attended grade/secondary school. It also determines how you vote. From what I thought, if you pay your taxes to a particular board, every voter in the household must vote in that category. We don't know if it's okay that my husband is in another category, when I am in the same category as what specified on our property taxes. I am not sure if is a census thing or a voting thing. We will be going down to the tax office to clarify...I'll let you know what happens.
    Have a great weekend!

BTW, Zarocat: I think you may be on to something...but I think that's another thread altogether...

I would contact Elections Canada - check their website

    http://www.elections.ca/home.aspx

Another option would be to contact your MLA or MP. Their office would be able to direct you where you need to go. Good luck :)

I'm confused by what you mean here. Don't you vote based upon your own beliefs/wants/needs? You are not required to vote a specific way just because you belong to certain school district/region/language/religion etc.

I may just be misunderstanding what your saying, if so, then please excuse me :) Your situation might just be an Ontario thing. Us West Coasters are known to be very free-spirited (or crazy  ) in our voting practices  ;):)

Oh yes, we can't vote for whichever party we want. It's only happened on the municipal elections, so I think it must be a census-related thing, so they can know how many french-speaking people are in their wards. Still waiting for the municipal tax office to return my call in order to confirm my deduction...
