I guess all rock bands get their own documentary nowadays

Nothing against KOL but a self produced doc after 5 albums and less than 10 years?

Look at Bob Dylan's "Dont Look Back". Made in 1965 and released in 1967. When it was made, he had five albums out in three years. U2's "Rattle and Hum" came out in 1989, and they had five albums out in less than ten years.

I don't see anything wrong with KOL releasing a documentary right now.
    Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

I guess you're right and I'm not saying it looks bad (actually it's got my interest), it just seems like an unusual amount of "Rock-Docs" are pouring out right now (PJ 20, Lemmy, Foos, KOL, etc.).
  • I think it's pretty awesome that there are a lot of rock-docs coming out though, I enjoy watching them, I'm actually looking forward to seeing...Lemmy, PJ20, KOL and Foos ;)

    The Lemmy doc is awesome.
  • I've heard that, unfortunately I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet, I've seen maybe like 10 mins of it maybe I'll make that happen this weekend if I can

If I remember right, it's Mike Inez that tells a story about drinking whiskey with Lemmy that just makes your jaw drop but then you think "oh yeah, it's Lemmy we're talking about here...nevermind."

Very cool haha I'll keep that in mind. Did you see the write up Rolling Stone did on him being the Vampire of the Sunset Strip? The dude is indestructible

No unfortunately I missed it but "indestructible" is the perfect adjective for him.

That's the one! It was pretty good. It made me start listening to them.

Looks awesome actually. I'm not a huge fan, but it looks like a pretty honest portrayal, and the all-family, son-of-a-preacher angle makes KOL a lot more intriguing as a personal interest story than a lot of other bands' would be.

When Depeche Mode did 101 i think they had 5 or 6 albums, so seems fine.
  • they cant win with alot of you folks! Ive never understood, even as a hipster, the idea of just because something is big and popular that its crap and stupid. hell, the biggest band in indie right now is arcade fire, and they are damn mindblowing.

whether you all like it or not, KOL is one of the biggest bands in the world. that alone makes this documentary make sense. In 1993 and 1994 when PJ was the biggest band in the world, and had what 2 or 3 albums under their belt, people here would have been clamboring and screaming for a documentary to be released. KOL has 4 or 5 albums out.

Just because something is popular doesnt make it bad. I dont care what anyone else says, Use Somebody, On Call, The Runner, Revelry, Crawl, those are damn good songs.
  • additionally, while im about as moral and ethical a person as they come, the fact that KOL makes no bones about the fact that they live the rock star life to the fullest extent, is exciting and i'd personally find that highly interesting.

the rock star, in the true sense, the debauchery of Led Zep and the crazy antics of stars in the 60's and 70's, theres really no band other than KOL that really lives that lifestyle anymore. The fact that KOL does, and doesnt care, is interesting, and facinating.

Arcade fire doesn't even remotely blow my mind. Do yourself a favor and go see My Morning Jacket live. They would most certainly blow your mind if you think Revelry is a good song and not a horrible "Melissa" ripoff. ;)

I find music/artist/band documentaries to be my favorite type of film, generally speaking.

I don't care if the band only has one album out. I always enjoy learning about how bands create, or just things i did not know about them before.

Even if i've never heard of the band or don't care for their music i'd be interested in seeing a documentary about them.

Also, PJ put one out after their fifth album (8 years into career)
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Man i'm lovin Arcade Fire right now, just got into them about 2 months ago, only there live stuff, there studios albums don't have the energy, what a fun band. Next time there in N.Y. i'm going.

I can understand KoL having a documentary. they have been around long enough.

What I don't get - is how Fantasia (or however you spell it) had a behind the music on VH1. Don't you have to make the music first? Who are you?

Also the Lemmy doc - not that great.

i'd seriously recommend you see AF at all costs next time they tour. Really, at all costs. There are quite a few people on here, and elsewhere, myself included that view their shows as spiritual experiences

Yeah, but "Dont Look Back" isn't just your run-of-the-mill documentary. Of course, Dylan isn't your run-of-the-mill artist either.

I agree man. Never got the hate for Kings of leon on here. It was this very board that introduced me to the band. I believe KOL has opened 2 tours with pj?? Their 4rth album blew up and they had a few hits. They are on a major label. The label found sex on fire marketable enough for radio, and boom! OBTN is a good album, as with the rest of their stuff, it's just more polished. (that's not a bad thing). OBTN does have some great tracks too. CASD is a solid album as well. Finally got to see KOL a week ago, and the show was great. Highlights for me had to be "on call", "back down south," "the bucket", "molly's chambers" and "fans." Documentary looks interesting and I love music docs, so looking forward to this. KOL is enjoying a little mainstream success, just never understood the "oh they suck" mentality that comes with the fact they gain some new fans. I'm not going to call them out on changing their sound cause CASD sounds like the earlier albums. It's just annoying to hear people trash bands over some time in the lime light. I don't think KOL will reach PJ status, but they deserve some time in the limelight.

I just saw an awesome movie last night - "It Might Get Loud"!

"A documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White. " - imdb.com

Fantastic stories and music. One of my favorite parts was watching Jimmy Page geek out to some music. Delightful!

Really? I was a little disappointed by it to be honest. Maybe I was expecting too much...I was so excited to see it. I should probably give it another watch...
