Teen pregnancy rates in the US is the lowest in two decades according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

"Yet according to the United Nations, the rate of teen pregnancy in the United States is nearly nine times higher than in the majority of other developed nations."

I was scared out of having sex in high school by talk of disease . Ok fine I admit.. nobody would actually have sex with me, but had it happened, I know I would've used protection. But then again I didnt start drinking and making poor decisions until college.

Will it get worse or better? I think the AIDS scare was worse back in the 90's, but hopefully kids are more educated these days.

Yeah, the 90's was a horrible time to hit your sexual adolescence! The 60's and 70's was a time of free love ... although there was a chance you would get drafted to Vietnam ... but I'd be willing to gamble. The 80's were still loose. But the 90's you had AIDS, STD's, and grunge clothing. A decade later, most younger women decided it's OK to dress like a stripper in public.

    Damn it!

You just summed it up very well. I feel better about myself now!;)

I have noticed though in the last 10 years or so that younger girls are dressing more and more like strippers in my area. Then again, it is damn near 100 degrees for 7-8 months of the year here.

i think i'm a little older than you guys, graduated high school in 1993 and i can agree with JP. i remember in high school being bombarded by things like those old mtv specials with tabitha soren or kurt loder talking about the prevalence of stds and aids and to a lesser extent the risk of pregnancy. also at that time i was still involved with the catholic church so i was also told that i was a sinner if i had sex for anything other than procreation, so i was getting a similar message from pop culture and the church. i did have sex in 11th grad, a lot, and we had pregnancy scares but thankfully they turned out to be just that, scares. the media back then did not glorify things like teen pregnancy with that show on mtv today about the teen mom. i do not know if this decrease in teen pregnancy rate will stay this way or if it is an anomoly.

Here is a thought ... I wonder if internet porn has anything to do with the rate decreasing? There is less need to have a girlfriend with the amount of content out there.

Or maybe just the internet itself is the problem as it is becoming the normal means of social engagement by kids today. I tried to play some video games at a friends place a few weeks ago and after fucking around with the settings for about 20 minutes, we came to the conclusion that we would all have to go to our individual homes and log online in order to interact together. Luckily, my friend had his old NES and a Super Tecmo Bowl tournament commenced. 8-)

 I was just going to chime in and say, that although the rate is down now, give it a few years for the Teen Mom effect to be fully realized. It'll be right back up there.

Funny the first thing I saw on MSN homepage today was a title "16 & pregnant". I didnt know what it was, but holy crap!

    from new york post:
"MTV's claim that its super-popular teen pregnancy shows were "cautionary tales . . . meant to cast a light on the harsh realities teens face when raising children at too young an age."

advertised as "More violence" too.. God its sad what they'll do to hook a viewer.

btw, Gimme, I graduated in '92, right there with ya!
