I have a reasonably new water heater and windows and have never written them off at tax time. Can I write this off if they are just a few years old? Thanks.

were they deductable they year you bought them? if so, you could file an amended return for that year.

The product must be a qualifying energy star product, and not all products qualify. Check the IRS list.
Its a tax credit, not a deduction. For 2008, 2009 and 2010, its 10% of cost up to $1500.
For 2011, its 10% of cost up to $500.
I think you can amend old returns going back three years.

Not 100% sure, but I think that is right.
