Hendrix at Woodstock

obviously this is one of the most legendary performances ever....i was watching the dvd of this recently, the same thing always strikes me - it seems there's a crowd of only a few thousand people watching him, theres more empty space and garbage visible on the grass than people...it also looks like its early morning, i don't know much about woodstock but i guess Jimi played towards the end of the festival when a lot of people had already packed up (and left garbage everywhere) and went home?

could this be one of those things where a lot more people SAY they were there to see it than actaully were?

    I heard there was a huge rain storm the night before and that caused a lot of people to leave.

    Still can't believe my dad was there to witness that and said it was all nothing short of amazing. Pretty sure Hendrix closed the whole thing though, and did so in the morning when a lot of the crowd had left.

    the festival was slated to end on sunday, but due to many technical problems the music went on into monday morning. he started to play at 9am which is why it seems many people were not there. awesome to see Jimi is getting some love on the boards!

    Monterrey was pretty awesome, but the Woodstock set is longer and seems to really push the envelope sonically in spots. This version of "Purple Haze" is the best version I've heard, not to mentions all the other highlights. Check out "Isabella" from this gig if you haven't already. :ugeek:

    Hendrix was due to play at midnight on the Sunday/Monday but there were huge delays in and between sets. Michael Lang, Woodstock promoter, offered Michael Jeffrey (Jimi's manager) the opportunity to take the midnight slot regardless of this but Jeffrey argued that Jimi would close the festival as originally agreed. So, Hendrix didn't take the stage until some time after 8am. There were "only" about 30,000 people left on the site by Jimi's Monday morning performance.

    Jimi was due to appear on the Cavett show - what would have been his second slot on the programme - that very night, but he collapsed with exhaustion after the Woodstock performance, crashed at his hotel, and didn't make the TV gig. Grace Slick, CS&N, and, I think, Joni Mitchell, appeared instead. Jimi made up for this a couple of weeks later.

    The "complete" DVD leaves out a lot of material, including Larry Lee's solos and two numbers, Mastermind and a cover of Curtis Mayfield's Gypsy Woman. The unedited performance is worth tracking down. It's out there.

    Now if they'd ever get around to releasing royal albert hall DVD/CD/LP for us.....and in a non-edited down version that would be cool.... :D
