Let's see if I can explain this.
Someone just gave me an old school 1980s style record player/am/fm stereo/dual cassette player. It came with 1 speaker. The brand is an SR am/fm stereo system, and it has 4 rca jacks in the back. I have an Onkyo "quartz synthesized tuner/amplifier as my receiver. It is at least 17 years old. I also just bought a cheap set of Sony SS B1000 bookshelf speakers, and they are hooked up through the receiver.
The speakers sound terrible and if I turn the volume up just a tad bit, there is a low humming. The one original speaker sounds better. I have played the radio, tapes, and records-old and new-and it is always the same.
Anyone have any ideas? Should I convert the speakers to RCA jacks so I can hook it up directly to the record player/stereo system? Is the receiver the problem?
