Thursday night alt-rock quintet Cage the Elephant launched their U.S. tour in support of their new album, Thank You Happy Birthday, at the 1,500-capacity Bogart's venue in Cincinnati, Ohio, not far from their hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Before the show the band sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at the season-opener between the Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers, and later their raucous 16-song set was a defining moment for the rising band, says SPIN contributing photog Keith Klenowski.
"It was one of those shows that people will be talking about five years from now, saying, 'Back in 2011, I saw Cage the Elephant at a small venue before they were huge,'" he tells SPIN. "It was electrifying. The show even reminded me of the '90s. It was like I was watching a young Pearl Jam or Nirvana. The energy, both onstage and in the crowd, was simply undeniable."
Cant wait to see these guys for the THIRD TIME!!! Terminal 5 in New York in May. Gonna crowd surf until I lose my pants. and even still go on

I must be really cool to have seen them open for QOTSA, FOUR Years Ago!!!!
it's funny you mention that, as I saw them on that tour as well, but totally forgot about it because I didn't really know their name or any of their music at the time. Then I was looking for a setlist for Queens from taht show, and I came across a comment that Cage opened for them, and I was like "oh yeah, I remember calling my wife between the opener and Queens and saying "I don't know, some band with Elephant in the name, they were really weird, but really energetic". Their album didn't drop until WAY after that. I don't remember what songs they played, were they playing the first album, or stuff from Perfect Confusion?

I really couldn't tell you. There was a civic strike going on in the city of vancouver at the time and the theatre it was scheduled to be in was part of that, so the venue got moved to a hockey rink out in the sticks. I remember liking the band, but I could not tell you what they played, I was juiced at that one and smoked a lot of weed when queens came out. QOTSA rocked as usual.
here is the poster with Cage on there as proof. ugly as sin.

as for cage themselves, i have the album or whatever, nothing amazing. like, dont love. maybe itll grow
i know i read alot of comments around here about them being a great live band. i couldn't disagree more. i thought they sounded terrible live, and i think it made me like the band less because of that. i was really excited to see them when they opened for stp and it was a big let down.
i'm going to see them with the black keys. so maybe they will sound better this time. but i'm not getting my hopes up.
you think the vancouver print is ugly as sin? check out the winnipeg poster. and I fucking bought it.

and here's the print to another show they had here. I wanted to collect all the Queens posters and blockmount them all. not exactly appropriate for my daughters (or ANYONE) to see on my basement wall. I haven't bought it yet for that reason:

But I have this one. I dig it:

anyway, sorry to derail the cage thread with my queens nonsense!

yeah, I like that one.
this is why i thought they sucked live. it seems as like the singer took multiple hits of speed right before he went on stage.
i like when a band is full of energy. but when it takes away from your actual performance when you are constantly headbanging and jumping out and down... not so good.
