AWESOME! FRONT ROW tix- A dream come true! Thank you 10C.

Ed was amazing, I hung on his every word. Sure do appreciate the little stories.
Golden State -was just beautiful as was Betterman.
Loved Porch and Rockin in the free world!
The man is truly gifted. An inspiration. Im speechless...

    Thank you Ed.
  • thanks 10 Club! Awesome tix, row CC (3rd row back, just left of centre) at the end of the isle, perfect unimpeded view. was great having a "lucky dip" for tix, made it such a surprise, like opeing a present!

Amazing gig, best i've ever seen, just a great vibe and an awesome crowd.

Loved when Ed introduced Wishlist and said this song is off the "give way" album, then went on to talk about how he read in yesterday's paper that perth had the worst drivers and made a couple jokes about merging.

True gentleman he is, handed a pick to the wheelchair bound fella in the front row. Awesome.

Rockin in the free world cranked. So stoked to see him play Unthough Known!

Just WOW, fingers crossed we get a bootleg!

Im sure Ed will be down this week to watch his buddies in the masters, crossing the fingers I bump into him!

Really great show, was WWAAAAY out in the heavens (Row X) as my membership lapsed and it was the only ticket i could get, but i'd rather be up in the heavens any day rather than not at all...

Ed' seemed in good spirits, a little croaky for the first couple of songs until he warmed up but in good voice overall.

Have to comment on the back drops for the stage, amazing, a really great idea and they gave the stage a fantastic look, for The End when the lights on stage dipped, it was as good as it gets.

Stand out songs for me (apart from The End which was my No.1) were the 2 songs you wouldn't have thought would work as a solo acoustic, Porch and Rocking in The Free World.
I think the crowd helped with them.

Plenty of Merch at the stalls right up until the end of the night.
Security on the doors was a bit dodge, posters up saying that bags would be allowed but checked and that anyone caught taking pictures would have them deleted, only to find as we were about to enter that NO BAGS were allowed at all. So, off to the cloak room we went.

thanks Ed' and everyone involved...Maybei misheard, but did Ed' say at the end "see you all next year?"

also, did i miss something, what was with the lab coats, and the guy with the big head who closed the curtain?

Have to agree, the backdrops were amazing, just perfect and made the stage all the better.

the little gimp dude who closed the curtains........ god knows, but it was funny!

lets hope PJ tour next year. they've just compiled 25 new songs, and I believe this month will start the cull to make it 12 for the new album next year. fingers croseed they tour it here!

Unthought Known was my highlight, other than the fact the entire show was a highlight for me. Ed was in great spirits, and the audience gave great energy the second half of the night.

tonight, well no expectations, but amazing possibilities await over the horizon

    A review from The West:

    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/entert ... ie-vedder/

    Music Review: Eddie Vedder

    Enlarge photo

    Eddie Vedder

    Thursday, March 31

    Riverside Theatre

As good a band as they are, a big part of Pearl Jam's incredible success in the live arena has always been the undeniable charm of Eddie Vedder and Thursday night offered the chance for fans to immerse themselves in the sensitive side of the magnetic front man.

Hitting a sparsely adorned stage to a rousing standing reception, the 46-year-old quickly showed he is just as captivating delicately plucking an acoustic as when belting out a soaring alt-rock anthem.

A cover of Tom Waits' Picture in a Frame kicked off things with the first of many covers ranging from Bob Dylan to humorous drinking songs.

Vedder's solo work on the Into the Wild soundtrack also got a predictable yet welcome airing, and showed songs like Setting Forth and Guaranteed are much better suited to a live setting than on record.

Fans also got a golden chance to hear Pearl Jam songs which, for some reason, usually get passed over during the band's gigs, with Off He Goes and Sometimes from 1996's, criminally under-appreciated, No Code drawing particular appreciative responses.

But perhaps the highlight was how refreshed the classic Pearl Jam material sounded.

Though those expecting the hits would have been mostly disappointed, particularly the idiot continually yelling for Hunger Strike at a solo show despite it being a duet, signature cuts like Better Man and Porch were so reinvigorated by the stripped down arrangements as to almost feel as new and enriching as they did before you'd heard them thousands of times.

As one has come to expect, Vedder's banter onstage was almost as golden as the tunes.

Whether it was explaining the distinctive characteristics of a ukulele ("Less strings than a guitar, more than a kite") or commenting on WA drivers' lack of merging skills, his wry observations and genuine warmth onstage make him one of the most likeable performers your likely to see.

Combined with the odd, quickly-forgiven muffed intro or lyric, the whole evening had the feel of a chilled party in a lounge room, except one where that friend who always pulls out the guitar actually has musical talent.
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town provided the evening's best sing-along, before a second encore of Neil Young's Rocking in the Free World and Vedder's own Hard Sun finished a joyous evening as it begun two hours earlier: with the crowd on its feet and smiles of thanks on everyone's faces, including from the stage.

  • Great work Chuggy on not giving 10C crap seats - Scored row A about 10 rows back dead centre, eye level, just perfect. Can't remember being at a seated gig where the Artist gets such a rousing standing ovation before he's even strummed a note or uttered a lyric. Set the tone for a awesome gig & it was great to show Ed how appreciative we were that he made it to Perth.
So looking forward to tonight & seeing what surprises are in store.

Thanks Ed & to all that made this tour happen.

Another review, very detailed, esp. on the banter

    http://www.perthnow.com.au/entertainmen ... 6032091262

AT first it was all a little odd. Here we were faced with one of this generation's rock icons and we were seated.

    Eddie Vedder
Riverside Theatre, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre
    Thursday, March 31.

Well, that was after the standing ovation that welcomed Eddie Vedder to the Riverside Theatre stage. The rare gesture was an indication of the level of respect and admiration this grunge survivor commands from his loyal fans.

Vedder himself looked slightly uncomfortable, but perhaps it was because, for once, the applause was all for him.

There were no Pearl Jam bandmates beside him, no one to deflect attention.

"Good evening," he said in a low, rumbling baritone as he took his seat front and centre.

Set up like a busker on the street corner with a backdrop of brown stone buildings and an array of goods and chattels littered around him, including battered old suitcases and a cardboard box, Vedder cultivated a slightly eccentric vibe.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.
End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
This was accentuated by his "helpers" who scuttled about him in lab coats unplugging his guitars and changing the backdrop.

Surprisingly the singer was devoid of the bottle of red, or two, that usually accompanies him onto the stage.

The Australian solo tour is his first outside the US and left local fans with no doubt that even without his bandmates, Vedder is a tour de force. Not that he left us wondering if Pearl Jam were going to disband. "I will be in the group until the day I die," he declared to roars of approval.

The show started in a low key manner with Vedder warming up with the Tom Waits tune "Picture in a Frame", "Sometimes" from Pearl Jam's 1996 album No Code and Bob Dylan's "Girl From the North Country".

Vedder easily commanded our attention as he plucked away at a range of stringed instruments -- guitars, a mandolin and ukuele -- all the while his incredible voice soared across the theatre.

While gently finger-picking his way through Just Breathe, his sixth song of the evening, Vedder failed to capture the attention of his sound engineer and stopped the song.

"Oh s**t, I wanted to say hello and take a break anyway, so how is everybody?

"I think about you a lot," he said. "Everytime I write my address, Seattle WA on the back of a letter, I think to myself, 'now wouldn't that be nice'."

A lover of our surf and weather, Vedder is particularly fond of the South West region, confessing: "I spent a crazy three days in Yallingup one night."

He suggested we could try swapping weather for a little while, "I'm not saying forever," he said when the audience raised their objections to his proposal.

Thinking better of it, he gave up his bid and launched into "Better Man". The song was given a mellow reworking, breathing new life into the old favourite.

Reaching for his ukuele, which is his songwriting instrument du jour as evidenced by the title of his forthcoming solo album "Songs for Ukuele", he advised everyone to "pick up one of these songwriting machines". "If you are high, then feeling a little down. This will pick you up."

The comment reminded him of a funny incident at a Seattle hemp festival in 1993. He said one speaker was debunking the myths surrounding cannabis use including the theory that it leads to memory loss, when he completely forgot which city he was in.

Vedder also took time out to touch on local issues including recent media reports that WA drivers are the worst in the country, particularly when it comes to merging. "I think that is very interesting. It doesn't seem like the people I know. Being a good merger is a good thing, it will smooth things out."

The driving analogy segued well into the "on the road" theme of the next section. Kicking off with "Off He Goes" Vedder then launched into several tracks from his debut solo album Into The Wild including "Setting Forth", "Society" and " Far Behind".

He stopped to thank Sean Penn for inviting him to write the soundtrack to Penn's film of the same name.

"It was these songs that gave me the opportunity to do this sort of thing without the group," he said.

He went on to speak of Penn's work in Haiti where the outbreak of cholera is wreaking more havoc upon the already devastated population. He said he would be donating money from the tour to the cause and urged others to pitch in "an extra few bucks".

The first set ended with one of Pearl Jam's finest -- "Porch". "You can stand if you want," Vedder said, sensing everyone was itching to get on their feet.

The emotionally charged encore was possibly even better than the first set with Vedder telling the crowd that they were easily the best on the tour. "It's more like the way I thought it would be for the whole tour," he said, "but maybe that's because this is the place I remember and this is how I remember it being." He added a quick: "but don't get cocky".

Eliza Jane Barnes joined Vedder on stage for the 1920s torch song "You Belong To Me" and John Doe's "The Golden State". Their voices harmonised beautifully, packing quite an emotional punch. Vedder rode the emotional wave with "Wishlist" before everyone joined in a mass singalong to The Beatles' classic "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away".

"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" is a highlight of any set and is often accompanied by mentions of Yallingup. Last night it was simply dedicated to the seaside town. "The End" from Pearl Jam's most recent album Backspacer, rounded out the first encore.

The second encore was the stuff of legend with Vedder, decked out in a lab coat, rocking out to Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World". He stripped off the coat and his shirt to get loose on "Hard Sun" from Into the Wild.

Again everyone was on their feet as Vedder danced around the stage, his electric guitar strapped across his shoulder and his wild hair flying around him. It was a familiar sight and one that had the crowd in raptures.

With or without Pearl Jam, there's no doubting Vedder knows how to rock. And he's definitely on a roll.

Sigh. I wish I could be in Perth tonight.
