What makes a good concert poster?

I must say I'm very confused. I've been looking through Pearl Jam posters from this tour and the 2006 tour and, for some that really jump out at me and make me go "Wow, that's neat," people criticize!! Then there are others that seem sort of average to me that people praise.

I am somewhat of an artist and have some experience doing different types of prints myself and I'd say I'm pretty good at it. I've never attempted something as complex as some of these but I would categorize myself as qualified to comment on the aesthetics of these posters. And, so, I must say that many of the comments these people make (I'm talking about the threads on Expresso Beans) are actually very ignorant and artistically uninformed, in my opinion. But some of these people are actually considered experts in the area of concert posters.

So I ask; what, in your opinion, makes a good concert poster?

    Nice one.

I forgot to mention: please provide examples with your response if possible.

Like with all art isn't it all within the eye of the beholder or whatever? Any show that I go to the poster is awesome, just because I was at the show. I don't ever worry about other posters because if I wasn't at the show why would I want the poster to commemorate the show unless it was like their last show or something really nuts?

to me, its the show I attended. The unique and one-of-a-kind factor associated with each show's poster. that's what makes it good for me.

I dont know how the folks over at Ebeans dole out the "expert" monicker, but I agree when their expertise is questioned. Its just a personal preference, then throw in a little tongue-in-cheek, and a little artist bashing and it takes on a whole new life over there.

I know there are few at ebeans that are very compassionate in their views and tastes and dont like anything that others have to say that is contrary to what they "know". Just have fun and dont hurt other peeps' feelings; like it for yourself, the show, the setlist, the artist, whatever! And if you dont like it, dont poo poo too much, and by all means, never try to make a dime on somebody elses talent.

being at the show does give it that special edge

    but

what really makes a good poster?

do you like the way it looks? - do you like the colours, the imagery, the sublime message? - heh, ;) does it look good on your wall?

then that, my friend, is a good poster

A good poster, in my opinion, has an aesthetically pleasing image. Like most people said, if the image is something I'd hang on my wall - its good. If its not something I'd hang - its not.

as always beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

i like a lot of different posters with no uniform reason to guide me.

I am pretty picky about posters. Takes a special design for me to buy one. I dont just buy everything I see! ;)

My friend was going to see Eddie last night. Since he was in Vegas, I gave him 5 Grand to gamble with. I told him I wanted it all to go on Black. Bastard! PhillyCrownOfThorns-11-2-12
