So I have been hanging around this kid who listens to Built to Spill. Before a month ago I had never even heard of them. I was just wondering what people here thought about them?
Thanks,
Steve :)

    A few thoughts:

    1. Great indie rock band. Much of current indie is owed to these guys.
    2. Great live show.
    3. Last 2 albums ("There Is No Enemy" and "You In Reverse") are significantly better than anything else they've done.
    4. This thread will be moved. ;)

This is false. I don't mean to argue, but their best album is "Perfect From Now On". It is by far their best and "Kept Like A Secret"is also up there. I'm not saying there newest 2 aren't great though, they def are. Also, def check out their live album it has a rockin version of Angry Chairs and Cortez the Killer. And yes, it is a great live show. I saw them cover Ripple by the Grateful Dead last year, which as you can imagine was a awesome.

Eddie said they were a great band at Outside Lands in 2009, so you are free to like them. True story.

Love Built to Spill! See my forum handle!

All if their albums are great!

Love Goin’ Against My Mind off You in Reverse.

Keep It Like a Secret is an all time favorite album and Perfect From Now On is spectacular!

Also, love Big Dipper! I could go on. Got to shake Doug’s hand at the Atlanta show last fall.

Agreed I can always hear that song any time. Just listened to Keep It Like a Secret and Untethered Moon last night!

So psyched for the new album in September!

(Not sure how we started this thread over here, know there is one in other music).

Built to Spill and Guided by Voices are the only other bands aside from PJ that I've seen more than 30 times and will continue to see every chance I get. They should be playing stadiums, but lucky for us, they play rock clubs. Check them out if you haven't heard them. I think Eddie mentioned Guided by Voices right after Fugazi in his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech.

one of my all time favorites

perfect from now on and keep it like a secret are desert island albums for me

seen built to spill more times then I can recall... they often would play 3 nights in Seattle, and I would go to all 3 shows or however many they would play.

not the most exciting band to watch, doug martsch (singer / writer) is the ultimate anti-rockstar / frontman, no flash, no on stage persona, no fancy clothes, just a dude and his guitar.... but the man can play guitar and write a song... keep it like a secret is from beginning to end a masterclass

when they had 3 guitar players, with doug, jim roth and brett netson...it was unreal... go check out the Live Album... it's all great but the 20 minute version of Cortez the Killer at the Showbox (which I was at!) is so good.. so is the 19 minute version of Broken Chairs

I can't gush enough about Built to Spill... and can't thank tim bierman enough for spinning their records back in the day at the old warehouse and introducing them to me (along with many other bands I had never heard and might never have listened to)

and like Carry the Zero (great song) said, Goin Against Your Mind, another just rad song, one of my favorites

That live album is amazing, especially Cortez and Virginia Reel Around the Fountain! So cool you got to see it! I’m a big fan of Goin’ Against Your Mind, love the solo to close out The Wait.

So psyched for the new album!

Side note: I love your Wrigley ‘16, Fenway ‘18, and Nashville ‘20 prints! Hung in my media room and enjoy them every day! Your Phoenix poster was amazing this year!

Have been listening to the new album a lot. Love it. Especially the last 4 tracks. Spiderweb is a new favorite of mine. Love all those different guitar parts he has going through it.

Seven years was a long wait for albums, but totally worth it.

Weird he has two songs on this that basically share song titles with No Doubt.
