So yesterday I took all three of the unlost dogs to the do-it-yourself pet spa and gave them all a bath. You never saw such mournful countenances. You would have thought they were on their way to be neutered/spayed again.

Sweet Pea, the coonhound, was particularly sad looking. And I should know after 8 years living with a Treeing Walker Coonhound that they don't forget easily or forgive readily.

So last night I climb into bed, slide my legs into the softness of my 1000-count sheets, and suddenly feel a big wet spot around my calf area. I fold back the covers _ it can't be _ can it?

Yes, it is a big round urine stain. And Sweet Pea jumped off the bed and was slinking into the spare room while the other two dogs milled around looking worried.

Her expression when I cornered her? A little guilty, a little defiant.

We both know she'd do it again...

Wow, probably doesn't mean the same in America, but that is probably the most racist name for a dog or anything. At least in australia it would be...

    It can't be the same.

A direct translation would be Aboriginal hound/dog. Coon is a very derogatory word here.... I guess the equivalent of the N word.

I was in shock when I read it, cause its a word we just don't say here.

you are aware that this dog trees Raccoons? Has nothing whatsoever to do with a human being? or derisive name for a human being?

Well and truly aware.... For not one instance did I think it was actually named after the Aboriginal people... But I'm just saying what it meant in Aust, and when I saw it I was like 'What?'

Just an interesting side note I thought.

Might be something you want to take up with the Australian National Kennel Club, which recognizes the Bluetick Coonhound within the Hound Group. Makes me think the term "coonhound" isn't largely considered derogatory there. As it isn't here.

Other coonhound breeds include the Black and Tan Coonhound, the Redbone Coonhound, and the English Coonhound. And the Plott hound as well.

Really? Well, I have never heard of the term 'Coonhound' until I read the post. It is the 'coon' part that is deemed derogatory and I would be lying if I said that I wasn't surprised that it is a recognised name. I guess I say this because one of my good friends is Indigenous, and I know how upset he gets if someone calls him that or refers to another Aboriginal person as that.

I'm not making a big deal over it. When I read it I was like 'Did I read that right?' Just in such a politically correct world, I was surprised. That is all...

  • Animals are smart like that. We used to have it fixed where our cats (we have two) could go in and out of the house. One time out girl cat, GiGi, got in trouble. She went outside, caught a mouse, and brought it inside to eat. I know she did it out of spite. However, they now have to stay inside all the time, so I think we won that one. ;)
