That would be the american thing to do, I'm sure you wouldn't have any problem finding a lawyer willing to take your money.

i get all my viruses from porn and downloading music and tv shows from questionable sources
its a hell of a lot more fun than opening blatantly hazardous links from long lost friends

a "new low" is the nigerians that pretend to be friends stranded overseas and ask you to wire them money
there are some shitty people out there if you're willing to fall for it

speaking of viruses... anyone have a cheap alternative to getting the computer cleaned by geek squad? i know there's stuff getting by my anti-virus and i wanna get my computer running at its old speed again

The only way I think you could sue is if you found out who wrote the malicious code. However, if their identity is uncovered, I would imagine they would have more problems than someone suing them.

If a hacker overtook or spoofed your friends' email or if your friend opened the same link and that link auto-forwarded to addresses in their address book and you tried to sue your friend, I don't really think you could win that suit. You could try, but I think you'd ultimately wind up spending a lot of money for lawyers, court fees, etc just to lose...and probably alienate your friend in the process.

I recommend MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)...it's an anti-malware program that does a pretty good job. Takes care of spyware, adware, trojans, rootkits, and rogue security software. That plus a good anti-virus should be enough for a computer. MBAM is available for free (and for purchase with more features). I use the free edition, which just means that I have manually run the scans instead of putting them on a schedule.

If your computer gets in really bad shape, you can always wipe the hard drive yourself and start over using the recovery disc.

Wow. I love how the 1st reaction is to sue someone. I know you may have been out of pocket to fix your computer but to sue? Gotta love the American court system. You would be laughed out of court, if you even got it that far here.

But anyway, look at it as a lesson learnt. Even if I got the same email link from someone I had regular dealings with I would be cautious clicking any link in an email that came with no description or anything. I would have been asking the person what it was a link to 1st. And I don't think this is a "new low" these emails have been going round since the dawn of email.

Try Super Anti Spyware as well. I use that in combination with Malware Bytes and they both seem to be pretty effective. Combo Fix is another one I will use for really nasty stuff.

Okay, so let's say an old friend you haven't written in a year or so sends you an e-mail with only a website link on the page, and nothing else.

    Would you open it?

No. Just a link to a site and nothing else - doesn't get much more suspicious than that.
