Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Rips, Rebuffs 'Glee'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/1 ... 37494.html

Dave Grohl don't wanna be "Glee's" monkey wrench. And Ryan Murphy isn't his hero.

Song play on words aside, the Foo Fighters won't be on "Glee" anytime soon.

Grohl, the band's lead singer, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the high school choir dramedy's penchant for using current pop music. He's not a fan of the pressure the show's creator puts on bands to give permission to use their songs.

"It's every band's right, you shouldn't have to do fucking 'Glee,'" Grohl told The Hollywood Reporter. "And then the guy who created 'Glee' is so offended that we're not, like, begging to be on his f**king show... f**k that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do 'Glee.'"

The rocker went on to mention the dispute Murphy and Kings of Leon had earlier in the year; Murphy was upset that the band didn't want their music on the show, and their drummer, Nathan Followill, struck back.

"F--- you, Kings of Leon," Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter in January. "They're self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It's like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music."

In response, Followill said, "Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f**k."

Those comments were seen as homophobic by some -- Murphy is openly gay -- and following the criticism, Followill apologized for the words, though not for refusing the show.

Ironically, it was a dispute that "Glee" guest star Gwyneth Paltrow helped mediate, and "Glee" cast members have since been seen at Kings of Leon shows.

Still, it doesn't seem like that's in the cards for the Foo Fighters -- Grohl revealed that he's no fan of the show himself.

"I watched 10 minutes. It's not my thing," he told THR.

Dave's the man. Don't like the way that Murphy guy handled the KOL thing, but I'm glad dave said what he said.

Most people wait until they're asked before declining an invitation. When's the last time the Foos were considered "current pop music"?
  • i respect dave highly. But i dont really understand his or anyone elses hatred against glee. Its not everyones bag sure, but what i like about the show is the love it shows for music. Every single problem in the world, according to the show, can be solved by turning it into a song and having it resonate. thats something that i personally agree with and hold true. Additionally, glee is brilliant for using pop tunes and showing how great those songs are. Im an indie kid. I love James Blake, and Radiohead and Broken Social Scene and Bright Eyes, but pop music i think is a great thing. Pop music is designed to be life affirming music, when you are down and depressed, you turn on a top 40 radio station and you get cheered up. I have long felt creating and singing a great pop song is an art form. to write and perform a song that gets stuck in peoples head is a gift and an art.

on another note, i respect the foos and dave. their debut album and the color and the shape are classics, but lets face it, they create pop rock songs. Big me, My Hero, Everlong. Those are great songs. But they are pop songs. and dave has flirted with pop his whole life. nirvana was pop rock as well at its essence. highly melodic and always had memorable choruses.

    My problems with Glee.......

I said it before in another thread, but I think think Ryan Murphy has a fucking cheek calling the drummer from KOL a homophobe, when the obligatory gay character in his show is nothing more than a one-dimensional caricature, way to reinforce stereotypes........

Then there's the obligatory disabled kid in a wheelchair, played by a non-disabled actor, what was wrong with having an actor who actually is disabled?

The guy's attitude plain sucks. He's not respectful to anyone who turns him down, despite the fact they may have genuine reasons for not wanting to have their music used. KOL in particular, really don't need to arm their critics with any more amunition. Use somebody had been hammered to death and covered by every man and his dog, did it really need the Glee treatment too, like the final nail in the coffin?

Dave Grohl was right to call him on his bull shit.

the thing about murphy is he is acting like he is doing bands like kol and the foos a favor by putting them on his stupid show. those bands are already household names. it is very immature of him to slag bands who do not want to participate in the further bastardization of their art. they do not want to be on there, so get over it, ya know? it is not as if their music being on the show will increase album sales or anything, which is not where bands make their money anyway. bands like the foos and kol are not money whores and they have paid their dues and actually made it to where they are their own way and do not need some cheesy television program to help spread the word about their music.

if my original band had made it i would have held the same opinion about this show as grohl and nathan followill.

now KISS on the other hand, i am surprised gene simmons is not all over murphy about getting their music on there. they are already doing dr. pepper commercials, so glee is the next logical step, right? i can see those kids dancing around all made up in dragon boots and pyro, etc...

I caught a little bit of Glee by accident once. I don't think it would be wise for a rock band to use that show as a forum to expand their audience. I think you would lose more street cred then you would gain.

I think that it's up to the musician if they want their songs on the show, and the creator shouldn't act like a spolied little child every time a band doesn't want to put their music on that show. It's just so fake, like 'yay! let's all sing a song, and be in perfect harmony without practicing it'.

LOL more foo comments on glee....

Dave Grohl fumes, 'Not everyone loves 'Glee'
Foo Fighters frontman rips show creator Murphy for attacking bands who withhold songs

    http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/42152018/ ... rtainment/

Don’t count on hearing the Foo Fighters hit “Times Like These” on "Glee" anytime soon. Frontman Dave Grohl says he and his bandmates are squarely in the corner of Kings of Leon and Slash. As in, they want no part of the Ryan Murphy-helmed show.

“It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do f---ing 'Glee,'” Grohl told THR following the premiere of "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth," the new Foo Fighters documentary which just made its South By Southwest debut. “And then the guy who created 'Glee' is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his f---ing show ... f--- that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do 'Glee.'”

Has Grohl ever actually watched the show? “I watched 10 minutes. It’s not my thing,” Grohl grizzled. But he doesn’t have as much of a problem with the series as he does with its creator.

Recounting anti-"Glee" comments made by Slash earlier this year and subsequent retorts by Murphy, reported by THR, Grohl explained to drummer Taylor Hawkins: “The 'Glee' guy, what a f---ing jerk. Slash was the first one. He wanted to do Guns ‘n’ Roses and Slash is like, ‘I hate f---ing musicals. It’s worse than 'Grease.'’ Then [Murphy's] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that, he’s a washed up ol’ rock star, that’s what they f---ing do.’ And then Kings of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little assholes ... ’ And it’s just like, Dude, maybe not everyone loves 'Glee.' Me included.”

Said Hawkins: “Yeah, f--- that s---.”

When their last album came out, and it's lead single stayed at #1 on the rock chart for 18 weeks straight, and then the second single for another seven. I'd say that's pretty current and relevant.

I didn't realize the Pretender did so well, but even still, I've seen Glee a few times... I can't see them throwing the Auto-Tune over a Foo Fighters song. I could never classify the Foos as pop music either. This week's top 10 for example... Pink, Enrique Iglesias, Lady Gaga, Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars, Pitbull with TPain, Usher, Britney Spears, Rihanna and Diddy. That's the kind of crap, I mean pop, they like to put on that show.

Glee fan of no glee fan. You have to love how dave updated taylor with the whole KOL and murphy trash talking.

Oh, and the hell with murphy and glee. He auto claims his show as a light for 7 year olds to follow music? What a moron. What kind of music would be my question.

Dave Grohl is correct. He put Ryan Murphy in his place (who probably never heard the word 'no' when he was growing up).
