Raconteurs & Dead Weather

Recently completed the White Stripes collection (except for Under Blackpool Lights dvd) and can honestly say I like it all. It's funny, I was late getting into them and then they broke up...

So next it's on to the Raconteurs and Dead Weather albums. I have heard nothing but good things about both. This weekend I will be picking up both records of either band so I am posting this because I am wondering what everyone's recommendations are as to which band to check out first. Does it even matter? Raconteurs first would be chronological but I'm a little more antsy to check out Dead Weather for some reason.

And, if anyone can simply elaborate on one or both albums by either or both band(s) it would be greatly appreciated. Which of the 2 bands do you prefer? I would just like to hear as many reviews/thoughts as possible before I pick these records up. Thanks in advance! :D

Go with the Raconteurs....Consolers of the Lonely sounds amazing on vinyl. They're more interesting as a whole imo.
DW is kinda one note to me, but still very kickass.

Consolers of the Lonely from the Racentours is one of my favorite Jack White albums, quite possibly favorite, even over all the White Stripes stuff. It's a must-own. I completely agree with Dewie's comments.

Both bands second album is the better of the two. I also prefer the Raconteurs but the Dead Weather stuff is good also.

I prefer the Dead Weather. Buy both albums from both bands, you won't regret it. 4 of the best albums of the last decade.

I bet you can figure which I prefer by looking at my avatar...

  • I really wasn't impressed with with Racontours and I am not much of a White Stripes fan, but Dead Weather blew me away in Austin. And Eddie even said, "Dead Weather were so fucking bad ass." The first album is killer. I guess I prefer Jack on drums over guitar.

both Racnteurs records are very solid.

broken boy soldiers- my fave of the two, and has more of a white stripes feel.
consolers- great album, more blues type sound musically.

    DW:
Horehound- good album but took me awhile to get into. their live show did it for me.
Sea of cowards- really awesome album. A bit different from horehound, I prefer this one, though both are solid.

I do love both bands, but Consolers is on of the best albums of the last decade.

  • Consolers of the Lonely all the way! The vinyl version is an awesome piece. "Carolina Drama", lyric wise, is about as good as it gets.

All albums are good though, IMO.

  • I like DW but The Raconteur's are considerably better, Broken Boy Soldiers is a competent debut but Consolers is a real progression and like some have already said sounds utterly incredible on the black circle.

The Raconteurs are so AWESOME!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D With Jack's blues feel and Brendan Benson's solid rock/alternative music they are a great band, one of my favorite!!!

Broken Boy Soldiers- This is a great album, nice mix of music and they lyrics are great!
Consolers of the Lonely- An even better album! A lot of songs, more rock with some blues, even better lyrics!

Totally check them out!!! Never really got into the Dead Weather. Hoping The Raconteurs make a news album soon!!! :D
    Tres Mts- 3/16/2011
    Eddie Vedder- 7/16/11

    Flight To Mars- 5/23/12
    RNDM- 11/27/12

PEARL JAM- 12/6/13 I have finally seen Pearl Jam live!
  • it's so strange, I love everything JW does, but I rarely listen to the Raconteurs. I probably listen to DW more than any of his projects.

I just ripped their Sea of Cowards live at TMR last night to my iPod. Listened to it all day at work. Kick ass.

  • Update:

    I bought Racs-Broken Boy Soldiers & DW-Horehound...

BBS is pretty solid, I like it. Standouts for me are Steady As She Goes, Hands, Store Bought Bones & Yellow Sun. The whole record is good, I'd say I like every song on it except 1 or 2, so it's 8/10 or 9/10 for me, both of which are good ratings.

As for Dead Weather's Horehound, I haven't been too impressed, honestly. Save for maybe 2 or 3 songs, I can't really get into it. Definitely a little bit disappointing but to be fair, I've absorbed the Raconteurs album more fully than this, so I need to give it more time.

Up next is Consolers of the Lonely (which everyone on here has been raving about) and Sea of Cowards, which I have a strange feeling will be better to me than Horehound.

Interesting what you said about 'Horehound'. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it and thought that it was just absolutely phenomenal.

Yep. It was an instant "love it" from me.
  • I personally like Horehound better than Sea of Cowards. To me, Sea of Cowards was just more of the same. Sounded very similar to Horehound...so if you didnt care much for Horehound yet...give it more time first. Go get Consolers of the Lonely. You wont be dissapointed

Horehound took some time for me to get into.

Will There Be Enough Water is an outstanding track and So Far From Your Weapon is another I really dig.

Seeing them live got me even more into Horehound.

  • Well I now have both albums by both bands and have listened to all of them quite a bit.

I'm finding that I like it all pretty much...just had to give it time. I ended up liking Sea of Cowards right off the bat, which I had a feeling I would. And Horehound took some time but I like it a lot more now. Consolers took some time which was surprising considering everyone on here raving about it but I get it now...there's some great stuff on there. Broken Boy Soldiers has really held up with repeated listens.

Man, I was gonna try to pick a favorite but they are all so good. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Now here's to hoping Jack gets something going this year with at least one of these bands.
  • red mosred mos Posts: 4,953
horehound did take some time to get into for me as well. I think seeing Dead Weather at ACL helped propel the interest. the songs just came to life live. Gave it the extra punch I felt was missing.

Instantly liked sea of cowards cause I saw them maybe a week before the release date. Played maybe 2-3 songs off it, but had a great atmosphere to it. Just took to this record alot easier. Again, I think the live show is the punch. DW live is incredible. Def go check out a show. Tix aren't bad. I paid like $34.50 GA and was 4rth row. Haven't seen Raconteurs yet, but hope to some day.

  • Can we expect anything from either band at all this year?

Obviously the Stripes are broken up at the moment so that leaves Jack free to get something going.

I know Dean Fertitia is busy with QOTSA, Alison Mosshart with The Kills and I believe Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler with the Greenhornes. And isn't Jack doing some producing and solo stuff? So it looks like we won't get anything for awhile....but I'd love some new stuff or some shows.
