Amazing video of a dog who refuses to leave another injured dog and acts as it's guardian following the quake and tsunami in japan. this video demonstrates that dogs are loyal not only to humans but are capable of showing that same loyalty and humanity towards their fellow dogs. it is kind of hard to watch, but at the same time it is really amazing to see the sense of loyalty and protection displayed by the dog. it has a happy ending by the way.

Dog in Japan stays by the side of its ailing friend in the rubble

It's a universal truth that dogs are man's best friend, but they're pretty darn loyal to their own as well. Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.

The video is a stark reminder that, as was the case when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, there will likely be thousands of pets orphaned or involuntarily abandoned due to the catastrophe in Japan. If you'd like to help efforts to help these animals, you can find info on doing so here.

UPDATE: CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town.

Here is an English translation of the voiceover exchange between the two reporters in the clip (translation courtesy of Toshiyuki Kitamura):

We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

Where?

Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

The dog is protecting him.

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

Yes! Yes! He is alive.

He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

Oh good. He's getting up.

It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.

Glad to hear they are both ok. Hard to watch. I guess even Japanese dogs have a sense of honor.

ABC World News tonight aired just a segment of that video. Thanks for posting the complete video site. It made me :cry::cry: The dog looks like a Brittney Spaniel. A old neighbor of mine to to breed them and raise them. Very sweet and great hunting dogs. :)

That is so tragic but also really inspiring.
Animals are often forgotten in disasters like this, its great to see people are out there trying to help.
Going home tonight and giving my boy a big ol' treat and taking him for a walk up in the hills...loves it :)

I cannot watch this even though I know there is a happy ending. There are people who say that they would never leave their pet behind. I would not either. I love mey cattledogs! But some people just did not have a chance. I watch news and hear that they saw their loved ones swept away - a mother was crying that she and her teenager daughter were holding hands, but the water swept her daughter away, a wife watched her husband swept away etc. Even if people might have held their pets tight, the tsunami was too strong - 20 m wall of water.
Some groups are working to rescue animals there - if you are on FB, go to World Vets, or Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support etc. I am sure there are more groups.

Not expecting PJ to sell bracelets ilke Lady Gaga or anything, but the PJ FB and webpage look like the world has not changed at all.... I hope PJ rally against nuclear powers at least. No NUKES!

I read on fb that the injured one has been treated at a vet in Chiba, and the other one is taking a shelter in chiba as well.
  • heartwrenching.

this is why dogs are truly the best animal companions.

Thank god they were rescued. That is really amazing what happened! I certainly had a tear in my eye, praying that the two dogs got to stay together in the end.

yeah i saw after i posted this that there was another thread in AET. i guess i had better check on that ahead of time next time. i wanted to post it here because i think it would have done us all some good to see the instincts that animals have. they are not that different from us in a lot of ways.
