Help! Don't want to lose my music.

I did something dumb. My external hard drive was filled up with my downloaded music and various different things. I wanted it to be solely for my downloaded music. I thought if I erased everything I could just load it back up off my ipod. Apparantly it's not that simple. So I went and erased all my music off of it. The music is still on my ipod but I can't transfer it. I took it to a tech shop and they were having problems as well. Does anybody know of software that would copy music from an ipod to an external hard drive. Appreciate any help.

Google around. I used a free program called something like "ipod rip" a few years ago and it worked pretty well. Sorry I don't have specifics, but I know it's possible. I almost lost all my music recently and I know how much it sux...

Try Copy Trans.... It was like 20 bucks one time fee (no hidden secret fees). I lost all my stuff and this bad boy got it all back...

  • Yeah, I tried several programs along those lines and Copy Trans is easily the best. It allows you to use your iPod like the portable hard drive that it is. I picked up their Suite, which was like $40, but it allows you to do what you're asking as well as create an image of your iPod, so even if your iPod is damaged or stolen, when you get your replacement, you can simply load the latest image onto your new iPod and get all of your music, pictures and playlists back just like before.
It saved my ass when my iTunes crashed and iTunes wanted me to erase my iPod to be able to sync, and the image saved me again when my iPod was stolen a couple years ago.

Thanks for the recommendations. I don't use itunes when i transfer music. If i use copy trans is it going to want to sync my ipod and effectively erase my music off my ipod?

Shit bro I don't recall off hand but I know I was freakin out when it happend.. Copy Trans was a pretty smooth process from what I remember. The only thing it didn't do for me was put all my playlist back how they were, no big deal though, it put everything from my ipod right back to itunes.. Trust me man, I was freakin out but it worked out in the end..I have close to 11,000 songs so it was a very streesful time.. Read up on it, pretty simple to use and worked like magic..

Just downloaded it...$20, not bad, price of a CD. Looks like I can transfer directly from ipod to external hard drive. Awesome. Thanks for the help guys. The guys at the tech stores gave me a few programs that they downloaded free but they were crap. Good for an album or two but nothing more, this one looks like it should do the trick. I'll let you know tomorrow how it worked out. Thanks again.
