Hi all.
Just listening to the Ten re-issue there and i have to turn it off when I get to the bonus tracks.
The versions of SOLAT, Breath and Brother are just painful to listen to. I'm too used to the Rearviewmirror versions and the brother off "rarities & unreleased cuts". I understand that these were included as they were recorded during the same session as the rest, but to non-pearl jam fans who might hear them they sound very poor and unrehearsed. They should have just put in the Rearview ones and the R&URC versions. Does anyone else feel the same way? Also, any reason why the Brother on Lost dogs was instrumental. The version off Rarities & Unreleased Cuts, to me, makes it one of their best! Anyway, just had to get this off my chest

the whole album is ear opening, which i guess was the point anyways...the old fashioned guy in me always yearns for the original...but it is an interesting listen...although admittedly i get so used to listening to the boots that oftentimes the studio versions of songs without much radio play sound so oddly different to me...

  • I like that they inlcluded demos and rehearsals(which is what solat sounds like). It fits with where the band was at that time.

Ive had quality versions of breath and solat for years and years.

Maybe it is just me, I prefer Redux by far over the original mix. Laways hated all that reverb. I also like the raw versions of Breath and SOLAT. Evil Little Goat, not so much...

I wish wish wish they would have just cleaned up the version of Just a girl that has been floating around for years and released that as a single..........it would have been perfect. Mike's solo is amazing. Not a fan at all of the version that was used.

Agreed.... I'm not sure why they didn't remix/remaster the original mastered recordings of:

SOLAT, Breathe, Dirty Frank, Wash, Brother....

    Would have been Wik.

  • That version of SOLAT was included because it's got Dave Krusen on drums. I love it - it's so much heavier & rawer than the "Singles" version.

I definitely don't think they should have added the versions from rearviewmirror. What would be the point of that since they're already out there? Twice! Non-PJ fans will hear them as what they are - outtakes & rehearsals. I think that's fairly obvious, and I think they are there to give an insight into the evolution of Pearl Jam's sound and the album.

As for Brother being instrumental on Lost Dogs, here's your answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brother_(Pearl_Jam_song)

Personally, I don't like the instrumental version. The version on the Ten redux brings back good memories for me because I'd had it on an old bootleg tape back in '92, so it was good to finally hear it officially.

Well why bother putting out the exact same versions that were on rearview mirror, no real point. Most would already have them.

And I don't think Ed was happy the lyrics to brother, so they stripped them off for lost dogs and just got mike to wail on it, and then they re-recorded the vocals for the ten re-release with the little sister stuff added. The original is way better. Love the cough at the start.

I don't know how anyone couldn't prefer the redux versions. They sound infinitely better.

  • It took me a while to like the redux, at first I thought it was too compressed, too loud blah blah blah
    but I love it now

Those bonus tracks were great IMO
    Specially Breath and SOLAT
Just A Girl and Brother are great too, love them the way they are
Agree with the person who said that they wished Just A Girl had been cleaned up a bit, released - I love Mike's solo too. It's a realllly good song

It's gone noon and I'm still sitting in my pyjamas spinning the redux vinyl. The sun is streaming through the window and it's sounding immense! I started with the original, but it couldn't compete. Viva Pearl Jam!!

Did Ed really redo the vocals for the re-release? He sounds so young.

I'd say that i prefer most of the Ten songs off Redux to their original mix with the exception of Oceans and maybe Jeremy. I think that the "new" Porch, Garden and Why Go are vastly superior.

And i actually like the versions of SOLAT and Breath. They are not the definitive versions for me, but i enjoy listening to them from time to time. Never liked that version of Brother though...i'm far from technical but something about Ed's voice always sounded over produced on that one. I much prefer the leaked version from years ago with vocals. I pretty much never listen to the last 2 tracks.

Yes i'm sure they were redone...something about them sounds very off to me though.
