  • Its a flanger effect. throw a bit of chorus in there too. just mess around with different ammounts until it sounds right to you.

Studio is probably a Leslie Cab, Live, he probably uses a Univibe, or a electric Mistress flanger

I'm trying to learn the intro to this too. Does anyone have a good tab? Given To Wail has it as alternate tuning. Is that correct?

  • The tuning for the intro (mike's part) is DADGAD. That is 6th-1st strings.

    Stones part is standard.

Thank you. That explains why I haven't been able to nail the intro.

I don't think so, because you can hear a ramping up that a phase 90 can't do, I may be wrong is my ears deceive me

I've never went for a spot on rendition, but I always used a chorus side on my vibe pedals when messing with it.

    A rotovibe gets 'close enough'.

In live versions, it's gotta be a patch on the MM4.

There are rotory AND phase sounds in the studio version. The rotary is more subtle, but it does things that the phaser doesn't, especially on the top end.

I would be willing to bet there is a chorus in the line, too. It's got a chimey-ness that can only be chorus.

Listening closer to the studio version, I'd be willing to bet there were two different signal chains into two amps. Maybe one rotary (even a Leslie speaker), and one with phase and chorus. If I was gonna try to fake it, I'd have at bare minimum a phaser, like a script Phase 90. A chorus would give it that sparkle. The rotary is a bit more subtle.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

Mike's part is really in DADGAD? Even live? I've always played it in standard

  • Yep, guitar tuning is DADGAD (low to high). Forget about the pedals, I think it sounds a lot cooler acoustic. If you want a one-on-one lesson with Mike on how to play it, then consult your copy of PJ20 :-) Once I realized it was an alternate tuning (he says that in the intro, but not which one !), and searched on the internet for clues, it was pretty easy to get the basic parts down. Now I've just got to MASTER it :-)

i'm pretty good at playing it standard on acoustic would love to see that alternate tab if you have it. 8-)
  • I haven't seen a MM4 on Mike's pedal board until I saw the PJ20 Pedal board. He's had the DL4 for a while but the MM$ is relatively new unless I'm missing something.
