CSC Funk Band “A Troll’s Soiree” (7” Vinyl) NOT LIMITED $7.99 – This troll likes to keep things plenty darn funky – as the CSC Funk Band really let loose on the excellent "Troll's Soiree" – a cool cut that has lots of sinister sharp angles and down-turned chords! There's a weird edge to the cut – kind of like deep funk, moved into some weird psych territory – as these little distorted bits keep threatening to come up from the background, and the horns almost have an out of tune, exotic sort of quality. The B-side offers up a darker dubbed out remix version of "A Troll's Soirée by Mari Ayabe (Concent Recordings/DUB Nomads/Chimp Beams) and propels this haunting track into a cyber cop show film noir soundtrack from the future.

The Black Angels “Another Nice Pair” (12” RED Vinyl plus Download Card -100 inserts SIGNED BY THE BAND will be randomly packed through the pressing!) Flying Lotus
Cosmogramma Alt. Takes LP

LIMITED TO 750 COPIES

In January 2011, Flying Lotus launched the webcam application, 'Trigger'. In a complete first, the application allowed owners of the landmark album Cosmogramma to scan their copy's artwork, and in return receive outtakes and new versions of music from the creation of the record as a thank you.

Flying Lotus said at the time:

“I’m really into old jazz traditions and I felt Cosmogramma was my jazz record in a sense. In that spirit, for anyone who’s bought the album, we’ve made something they can use to get new tracks and alternate takes from the original Cosmogramma sessions as a gift from us.”

After launch, social networks were abuzz with fans talking about this never-before-seen interface, discussing the new music and experimenting with secret combinations of images to unlock further, hidden tracks.

One of these Facebook posters, Greg Ingraham, suggested we compile the Cosmogramma Alt Takes music on limited, collectable vinyl for Record Store Day. It seemed fitting, and we liked the idea.

So we will.

Bibio / Clark
Willenhall/Baskerville Grinch Split 12"

LIMITED TO 500 COPIES

This double A-side split 12" between two of the UK's best young producers might seem like an unusual pairing at first; Bibio aka Stephen Wilkinson was known for his soft guitar loops and found-sound collage recordings until his recent Warp release Ambivalence Avenue, which saw him trade in his ambient leanings for Dilla-esque beats loaded with bass, hazy guitars, live percussion, and beautiful vocals, layered atop sounds from Troplicalia to folk. Whereas Clark (née Chris Clark) has always been known for his hard hitting, techno-meets-IDM stylings, from his first Warp release 10 years ago on the venerable electronic music label, all the way through his recent work remixing Massive Attack and Friendly Fires. But these two kindred spirits have become quite good friends, and decided to get as grimey as possible on these two tracks, which will come packaged in the classic Warp Records purple sleeve as a special Record Store Day release.

Oval/Liturgy
Split LP

LIMITED TO 400 COPIES

For Record Store Day 2011 Thrill Jockey offers up a split LP release featuring two of the label’s musical extremities, recent signing Liturgy, and electronic pioneer Oval. Not a random pairing, but in fact born out of each band’s mutual appreciation of the other. The artists are both given a side of an LP to share exclusive new recordings.
Cost: $11.30 SLP: $16.99

Mitchell and Manley
Norcal Values LP

LIMITED TO 300 COPIES

Floating down the Yuba River, hang gliding off the cliffs at Fort Funston, a day at Ocean Beach with the dog, a leisurely stroll in Golden Gate Park, a fat bag of Trainwreck; these are among the many images that come to mind when listening to Mitchell and Manley’s Norcal Values.

Inspired by his spiritual advisor, Bettina Richards, Phil Manley recruited the shredding stylings of Earthless’ Isaiah Mitchell to collaborate on a record comprised almost exclusively of a single continuous guitar solo. The recording was made live with no overdubs - completely improvised. This recording exhibits inspiration so pure that it could only come from within. Drawing from the classical Indian music tradition as well as from modern new age music, Norcal Values is the sonic equivalent of fine Californian cuisine. We invite you to dine upon its bountiful aural splendor. Bon appetite!

Black Twig Pickers/Glenn Jones
Split LP

LIMITED TO 300 COPIES

Side A1:
Glenn Jones, a 30+ year devotee of the so-called “American Primitive” school of acoustic steel string guitarists, has been playing guitar since the age of 14. He formed Boston pysch-rock band, Cul de Sac, in 1989 and led it on its 20 year journey to nowhere, leaving nine albums in its wake, including collaborations with guitarist John Fahey and Can’s Damo Suzuki. Jones was also close friends with Jack Rose and they toured together in the U.S., Canada, Europe and UK. Even to Win Is to Fail was recorded exclusively for this release and Jones will follow it with a full length album on Thrill Jockey later this year.

Side A2:
So a few years ago, Charlie Parr, country bluesman, songwriter and reso guitar and banjo king of the Upper Midwest, and the Black Twig Pickers, scrappy stringband of the Virginia/West Virginia state line, are kicking up a storm at a house party in Blacksburg, Va. It had already been an evening to remember, with three generations of the Thornton family playing a set that included Curtiss, the eldest, singing a hair-raising “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” and accompanying himself on dobro. But now Parr and the Twigs are throwing down, ripping through fiddle tunes and blues while a houseful of rowdies dances, jumps and shouts. But then the guy that lives downstairs decides he’s had enough. Wearing his pajamas and a leather jacket, he’s standing on the back porch yelling, saying he’s calling the cops unless people quit stomping on his ceiling. The Twigs try a quieter, slower fiddle tune. People shout and stomp and shout some more. It’s time to go. Then Sally steps up and says she and her roommates are moving the party to their house, just a few blocks away. It’s Blacksburg, so nearly everything is just a few blocks away. Soon the ruckus resumes at Sally’s, with music and dancing into the early hours. Fast forward a few years. It turns out that Sally, besides being an excellent dancer, is a great fiddler and knows how to call a square dance too. She starts sitting in with the Twigs at dances. And Parr and the Twigs keep playing together whenever Charlie’s globetrotting tour schedule and the Twigs ‘ rounds of community events line up. Along comes EastMont Syrup: part reunion, part hoot, part lament for times and pals gone by -- and part sampler for what’s to come.

Immune Recordings

Steve Gunn and Ilyas Ahmed
Split 7"

LIMITED TO 200 COPIES

For Record Store Day 2011 Immune is proud to present a split 7" featuring new tracks from Steve Gunn and Ilyas Ahmed. The 7" comes packaged in a proper jacket with collage artwork from Ahmed. Included is a free download coupon and insert.

Native Philadelphian Steve Gunn has been a stalwart of the American experimental scene for closing in on a decade. He is known by many for his contributions as one half of the core duo behind GHQ (with Marcia Bassett) as well as for his many other affiliations with underground luminaries such as Tom Carter, the Magik Markers and Marc Orleans. Gunn has an incredible talent for fusing traditional American song structures with a raga influence, his playing effortless and his songcraft incredibly strong. His solo work began with some CDr and cassette releases and was followed with two incredible albums over the past years - "Sundowner" (Digitalis, 2008) and "Boerum Palace" (Three Lobed, 2009). Last year he released "Sand City" on Three Lobed, an album featuring him and percussionist John Truscinski. Gunn will release a new album of material on Immune in the near future.

Pakistani-born musician Ilyas Ahmed traffics a sound that borders on the folk/drone/raga/rock axis, one that Scottish critic David Keenan has called "gone". Currently residing in Portland, OR, Ahmed has released recordings on Immune, Time-Lag, Digitalis, and Root Strata. He is known to perform live with Honey Owens (Valet) and Jed Bindeman (Eternal Tapestry, Heavy Winged). Ahmed has recently been performing and recording in a duo with Liz Harris (Grouper). Last year Immune issued a deluxe vinyl edition of this first two albums - Between Two Skies & Towards The Night.

Boris
Attention Please LP

LIMITED TO 3500 COPIES

Iconoclast Japanese trio Boris are widely known for their ability to breach styles and stretch sonic boundaries of all that is heavy, psychedelic, droning and downright cathartic. But, Attention Please is more like a complete redefining of their potential in several ways. First and foremost, it is the first album on which all vocals are sung by lead guitarist, Wata. While she has previously sung on a couple of songs for singles and her own solo recordings, the entire 10-song album features her intimate, multifaceted vocal style. Secondly, the songs on Attention Please have a sultry, intoxicating catchiness to them. It's melodic without sounding pop. It's psychedelic without sounding dated. It's heavy without relying on barre chord riffs.

Daedelus
Tailor-Made 12"

LIMITED TO 150 COPIES

After a busy couple of years of touring, remixing and releasing singles and EPs with Brainfeeder, All City, Magical Properties (the Daedelus homeimprint), Alpha Pup, Warp and Stones Throw, Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus returns with his next 12” on Ninja Tune. Suitably named “Tailor-Made,” this title sums up the unique and eccentric vision of a musical artist as obsessed with the clothing of the Victorian era as he is with the music of the future.

An exclusive 12” release for Record Store Day “Tailor-Made” is a delicious amalgam of wiggly keyboard lines, four-to-the-floor kicks, drum box flourishes and woozy, beautiful vox from Milosh. It builds and builds into a frenzied, ecstatic Daedelesque finale which will have you itching for more. Remix duties are taken care of by highly-rated fellow LA-er Jennifer Lee aka TOKiMONSTA. She gives it some of the LA Beat Scene lope while sneaking it a double-time shuffle all her own. As well as London based producer/dj/composer Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points who has quickly become one of the most respected and sort after musicians in modern music.

Luaka Bop

Shuggie Otis
Inspiration Information: World Psychedelic Classics 2 LP

LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES

Who knew that there was an artist as amazing as this who could have been so overlooked for so long? His trippy R&B jams are equal to Marvin’s and Curtis’, but somehow more contemporary sounding.. closer to D’Angelo meets DJ Shadow. And with a name like Shuggie, how can you go wrong?" - David Byrne

When Luaka Bop released Shuggie Otis' Inspiration Information in 2000, we told you this by way of introduction:

Shuggie Otis was a visionary. Compared at the wispy age of 15 with Hendrix and the great Kings of blues guitar (B.B., Albert, Freddie), the young phenom went on to make two expansive, genre-defying, deeply curious albums: 1971’s Freedom Flight and 1974’s Inspiration Information. The records, essentially crafted as a one-man band, floored Sly Stone, gave the Brothers Johnson their most enduring hit (Strawberry Letter 23), and predated the stylistic synthesist Prince by half a decade. Over a decade later, we know this: Inspiration Information is a seminal record. Though it sold only a few thousand copies in its original release (1973) Luaka Bop sold over 100,000 copies twenty-five years later. But like the best records its influence and reach is unquantifiable.

Luaka Bop is proud to bring you this stone-soul platter today on 180 Gram Double LP Vinyl. Ask somebody.

Os Mutantes
Everything is Possible: World Psychedelic Classics 1 LP

LIMITED TO 750 COPIES

The late ‘60s in Brazil produced an explosion of creativity that is still reverberating throughout the world...and Os Mutantes (The Mutants) were the most outrageous band of that period. Their creative cannibalism produced psychedelic gems unlike anything else, and they sound as relevant today as anything happening anywhere. They were exactly what their name implies: a mutant genetic recombination of elements of John Cage, the Beatles, and bossa nova. A creature that was too strange and beautiful to live for very long, but too strong to ever fade away. It lives again. Be prepared. - David Byrne

Os Mutantes Everything is Possible World Psychedelic Classic 1 - A record that can claim its rights as having introduced a new generation of artists and listeners alike to Brazilian tropicalia. Limited to a pressing of 750 copies on 180 gram vinyl, the gates open on Record Store Day. This will be gone before you can say 'Onde foi que o mutante fugir para gravar?'

Kill Rock Stars

Various Artists
Kill Rock Stars LP

LIMITED TO 2000 COPIES

Twenty years ago, yes T-W-E-N-T-Y, Slim Moon formed the fiercely independent label Kill Rock Stars and released a comp of the same name. It was a silkscreened, limited edition LP and featured bands that had either played the International Pop Underground Convention or who were from Olympia. This included bands that were already successful (Nirvana, The Melvins) mixed in with bands that were about to affect pop culture at large (Bikini Kill, Bratmobile) as well as bands that were to help define the underground scene for the next decade or so (Unwound, The Nation of Ulysses, Mecca, Normal). Kill Rock Stars is a vital document of an important era in independent music. We would like to both celebrate our anniversary and recognize the vital role record stores have played in our existence by offering 2000 limited edition LPs with silkscreened, hand-numbered covers just for Record Store Day 2011.

Hyperdub

Kode9 and the Spaceape
Other Man / Love is the Drug (feat. Cha Cha)

LIMITED TO 100 COPIES

‘Otherman’ backed with ‘Love Is The Drug’ is the lead single from Kode9 And The Spaceape's second long player 'Black Sun'. Coming from oblique angles, these two songs introduce the breadth of the album.

‘Otherman’ opens with a sombre, arpeggiated march built from wavering analogue synth drones, lulling the listener until Spaceape's cracked communique interrupts the flow with downtrodden descriptions, wrapped around lop-sided rhythms. Sombre, flatline funk.

‘Love Is The Drug’ features the vocals of Cha Cha, a singer from Shanghai, who guests across four tracks on the album. ‘Love Is The Drug’ is ambiguously connected to house music by speed, but oper-ates on a much rawer emotional level here, over a droning synth and an aggressively coiling drum pat-tern with the sound of a pumping heartbeat at the centre. Cha Cha's vocals drift into a sensual pattern as the melody soars beneath her, before confirming the suffocation of love, with Spaceape whispering over her shoulder.

Some places used to do this but now there is a pledge. The pledge states that any unsold RSD product, can go to a music store's online webstore the next day, at the *same* price it is in the store. So if the Mastodon/ZZTop single is $8.99 in store, it is $8.99 on the website.

Stores are *not* allowed to sell any RSD items on Ebay, until 30 days after RSD.

Yeah how exactly does this work, can you order stuff online on the day or do you actually have to turn up at a record store? Sorry for my ignorance.........some really cool stuff on that list.

I'm going to ask the guy who works at my local record store to hold me records because I have a 5K to run that morning.

This was an email sent to me from http://www.reporecords.com in Philly..I'm pretty sure you have to pick your order up at the store......best thing to do is call local shops and ask them what they are going to have.

Hmmm, could be difficult, not many record shops near me (I'm in the UK). Well I'll keep my ear to the ground.
  • I live in Germany and I don't know where there could be a record store in my area where I could get the stuff.
Is there a list of shops participating?
Do Ihave to buy In-Store, or can I also order online?
    Thanks.
  • After talking quite extensively to the local rs guy in town, he can NOT hold things for people (although, I don't know if its not against the rules or just his stance) or take 'pre-orders'. You MUST be there- first come, first serve. There are a lot of rules that owners must stick to in order to participate, but I'm sure there is slight variation from place to place.

He also mentioned, as did the OP, that he can't put items up for sale through ebay for a certain amount of time.... If he wanted to, but he's not a dickflip like that.

Hope that helps a smidge. :)

They usually have everything at Coachella the day before RSD, but since I won't be there on Friday, I will try my luck a Freak Beats in Sherman Oaks.

Most stores adhere to the "purity" of RSD, so they only sell in-person, and they don't hold-back anything. Some record store owners hold stuff back to sell on ebay for a high price...I think this is frowned-upon by the RSD organizers if they items are first offered for sale in person at msrp.

Luckily, my shopping list is REM, PJ and The Foos, and none of them are listed as very limited, so hopefully I can get them easily.

The Mrs. will want the very limited Beady Eye box set, so that may take some effort.

They have a huge pop-up record store at Coachella, and said store participates in RSD, so they usually have most of the releases. In prior years, they have sold the RSD releases on Friday, and for a few $$, they will hold your stuff after you purchase it.

Also, they usually have approx a dozen artist signings per day.

Both. From my experience it's always been a grab bag whenever I get to the store. You won't realy know what's hot or not till you get there. And the stores don't really know how many copies or of what they'll be receiving.

I thought the Flaming Lips: Dark Side of the Moon was going to be an easy buy but it was sold out...but then I found it for sale again in November and picked up a copy.

The only way to assure yourself is to get there early. It's the only time of the year you'll see hipsters out in public before 11:00 AM.
