Foo Fighters

I know the Foo Fighters have been around for a while. I completely neglected this band for their entire career. Every song I hear from them on the radio rocks. Some of my favorite songs to play on the guitar are the Foo Fighters however its all their main radio hits. I want to hear some of their music that isn't heard on the radio everyday. I'm sure there are some great songs from them that haven't been raped by the radio. I am hoping their similar to PJ where the songs on the radio (Alive, Jeremy, Evenflow...anything from Ten) are great but the treasures are hidden else where.

So what songs or albums should I dig up?

I do love the Foo Fighters...they're the first band I ever crowd surfed to....

This isn't really a recommendation but I think Foo Fighters have an amazing ability to close out an album with an amazing song...every album has a phenomenal end track...
  • Start with The Colour and The Shape.

yeah, then follow it up with the first one (self titled)

I seem to be alone in really loving One By One. But Colour & the Shape is their masterpiece. Make sure you get the Baker Street cover - they blow away Gerry Rafferty (RIP).

Some of my fave non-radio songs: For All the Cows, Hey Johnny Park, My Poor Brain, February Stars, New Way Home, Stacked Actors, Aurora, Low, Lonely As You, Come Back, Over and Out, Stranger Things Have Happened.

Really all their albums are solid with the rare clunker here and there. Enjoy!

You can start with the self-titled debut from '95. I think it's still their best. The Color & The Shape is a close second, followed by There's Nothing Left To Lose.

    Colour & the Shape

    One by One

For the life of me I don't know why no one ever talks about One by One. Not only does it rock, it sounds great.

One by One is a vicious album. Very straightforward rock. It's funny, the way Grohl has been documenting the new album as being recorded in a garage and describing it as having a great sound is how I have always thought of One by One.

Hell yeah I love One by One as well, kick-ass record! Probably my 2nd favorite of theirs after The Colour and the Shape.

The first 3 albums are must-haves. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any album. Also, I highly recommend picking up their new one, Wasting Light, when it comes out 4/12. I saw 2 of their secret shows here in L.A., in which they played the new record in it's entirety and they were amazing.

Deeper cuts that I like that I don't think have been previously mentioned: Wattershed, Up in Arms, Enough Space, Walking After You, Generator, No Way Back, End Over End, Miracle, On The Mend, Come Alive, Cheer Up Boys(...)

I forgot about Cheer Up Boys Your Makeup Is Running. That song fucking rocks!

Personally I think There is Nothing Left to Lose is their best studio album and Aurora is an excellent song to say the least. I would download a live foo fighters concert boot and begin there because like PJ they are awesome live.

This album is nice, a bit more chill than most of their stuff. I didn't even really know Aurora that well, and they played it during an encore and the lead guitar was just spectacular and echoing through the arena. I had to go home and figure out what song it was. (I've heard people say this is a really hard album, but Dave himself has said it was a more laid back album for them - I don't understand where people come up with this stuff.)

The Everywhere But Home DVD is awesome.

(Confession: I've seen Foo Fighters more than I've seen Pearl Jam. )

I actually like the cover. I see it as an aumage to a late 70's early 80's album cover.

As most have stated, The Colour and The Shape is their best. Be sure to get the re-released version with 19 tracks. My favorite track is a more obscure one. It's the b-side the did for the "Learn to Fly" single titled "Iron and Stone". They also released it on the "Breakout" single. Killer, killer song. I believe it is a cover, but not sure who the original artist is.

Have fun exploring their catalog. I've been a huge fan of theirs since 95 and have yet to hear an album of theirs I didn't think was awesome.

Alone + Easy Target is another great one I forgot. Spectacular song for running (alone of course).

The One is on the Orange County soundtrack by the way. Maybe it's available on itunes these days; didn't used to be. Or I can send it to you. ;)

I've got it. I think I got it from someone here. Thanks though man. Much appreciated.

for the OP looking to get into Foo Fighters:

also forgot to add "word forward" to my list. The song is bad ass. It's on the Greatests hits, but was a label requirement cause it was a new song never released. Same thing with "wheels" "wheels" had to grow on me, but I really like it now. Their live show is really the best way to expierence Foo fighters. I also agree on the recommendation for "anywhere but home" great dvd.
