Jumped while listening to "Alive"

I had to share this, but didn't really know where on the forum, so hopefully this place is most fitting.

I was walking my dog last night in a Syracuse, NY park that's more dangerous at night than during the day. Only reason why I even went into the very outskirts of the park was to dispose of my dog's waste in the garbage can. A couple teenagers had followed me into the park (I'm 30), and I was suspicious of them but after I dumped the waste and turned around to get out of the park, they jumped me from behind. I didn't hear them coming because I had big headphones on. So after a hard knock to my neck/head they took me down and at some point after many kicks and punches I got them off me, and amidst many expletives, asked them if they were jumping me for my ipod, because that's all I had on me besides my cell phone. They demanded I give it to them, but at that point I was already on my feet and facing them. My dog was just standing there, she was fine. Apparently they didn't do anything to her, and she certainly didn't step in to help me...which I'm actually thankful for because she would have gotten hurt. But anyway...I wasn't about to give up my ipod classic without another brawl. Some people came out of their house to see what was going on and the kids took off.

Because of the whole incident, I had forgotten what I was even listening to before I got my head wacked, and during the scuffle, my headphone jack came out of my ipod and if you own an ipod, you know that when that happens it automatically pauses. So I pick up my headphones off the snowy ground, and go to test my ipod (which still works), and there it was: Alive. From Toronto 09, a show I was at no less.

Seems fitting huh? And I have not yet finished listening to the track.

And an on even lighter note, one of my friends asked me why I didn't "unleash the lions" on these kids. I replied by saying, "I 'dropped the leash', isn't that good enough?"

True story. Happened last night.

wow, that is pretty crazy. I had a similar experience, and you're right about things being put into perspective. I hope karma comes around to everyone in this situation.. those punks should get what they deserve. Glad to know you're ok.

you must have gotten a good look at these fuckers, did you file a police report?

i did get a decent look and could maybe spot them again, but at the same time they look like a thousand other kids, so it's kind of a moot point, ya know?

a guy down the street standing in his driveway at the time called 911 for me, and an officer did respond, but because i was standing with no significant injuries she didn't seem too concerned for me. she asked if i needed an ambulance and i said no. asked if my dog was ok and she seemed to be fine. then another officer arrived on the scene and said he'd checked the nearby areas for these kids, but didn't see them. the guy who called 911 said outloud, "they walked thru the snow, you can probably follow their tracks", but the cops weren't interested.

at that point the situation seemed to be over, and i walked home. and no, they didn't offer me a ride, and did not even offer to follow behind me a little bit.

not trying to "bash" the syracuse police here, but they definitely made me feel like this was a routine situation and that they had better things to do. and perhaps they did, who knows.

i didn't verify if an actual report was filed, and i'm sure there isn't one.

know what's also funny...an old lady came out after and said "i heard the whole thing" and then gave my dog a treat, which was nice, but at the time i was thinking, "well why couldn't you be an old lady and come out and say 'hey you kids!!!...stop that!!!...i'm gonna call the cops!!!'" SOMETHING. i mean geez it happened 50 feet from her house.

reminded me of that Dane Cook stand-up about car accidents and how there's always some old lady who comes out after and says "i was in the kitchen, i heard it, and came outside". i honestly don't think he's the funniest comedian but now that that's happened to me i find it to be ironically humorous. at least it doesn't hurt to laugh!

:o Incredible story. I am glad to hear that you and your dog are alright. I never could understand why people don't help when they hear or see something going down. I don't understand why the police didn't make sure you got home safe. It takes a strong person to laugh about something like that. :) I agree with Binaural Jam, Alive was the perfect song for the moment.
Lots of love, light and hugs to you all!
