The word *vegetarian*

I'm reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, and within multiple sentences he reference vegans and vegetarians. Does the term vegetarian imply what used to be termed ovo-lacto vegetarian? When I was vegetarian 1991-1997 I had to qualify the word with ovo-lacto.

    Yes, I would assume that vegetarian still means ovo-lacto. The only key point being not eating actual animal meat. Animal products though are acceptable. Vegan on the other hand...

    Yeah, a lot of people like to clarify the term now because veganism is on the rise - "vegetarian" refers to someone who eats no meat, but does consume animal products (dairy, etc.).
