Favourite Greg Dulli album?

I've been listening to the fantastic Dynamite Steps pretty constantly all weekend and it got me thinking about the other Dulli albums that I have grown up with over the years. I got into the Afghan Whigs around the time of Congregation so, along with PJ, Mark Lanegan and R.E.M., Greg Dulli has been pretty much a constant in my musical life for the last 20 years...

Afghan Whigs - Big Top Halloween (1988)
Afghan Whigs - Up In It (1990)
Afghan Whigs - Congregation (1992)
Afghan Whigs - Uptown Avondale EP (1992)
Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen (1993)
Backbeat Band - Backbeat OST (1994)
Afghan Whigs - Black Love (1996)
Afghan Whigs - 1965 (1998)
Twilight Singers - Twilight as Played by The Twilight Singers (2000)
Twilight Singers - Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair EP (2003)
Twilight Singers - Blackberry Belle (2003)
Twilight Singers - She Loves You (2004)
Greg Dulli's Amber Headlights (2005)
Twilight Singers - Powder Burns (2006)
Twilight Singers - A Stitch In Time EP (2006)
Afghan Whigs - Unbreakable (2007)
Gutter Twins - Saturnalia (2008)
Gutter Twins - Adorata EP (2008)
Twilight Singers - Dynamite Steps (2011)

13 albums, 1 compilation, 1 soundtrack and 4 EPs since 1998 is a pretty impressive return, especially considering the quality of the music that he makes (hey, even the Backbeat album is fun to listen to!)

Like PJ, my favourite Greg album can change from day-to-day. Right now, it's between Black Love and Powder Burns but I could probably play any one of the above tomorrow and change my mind again.

I know there are a lot of Greg fans on here so I was just wondering what other people's favourites are?
“Do not postpone happiness”
(Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
(Tim Rogers)

They are my two favourites. Black Love in particular has long been in my top five records, not a bad song on it. Powder Burns has a very similar vibe to Black Love, a very cinematic feel.
  • Check out Greg Dulli - Live at Triple Door on itunes. Its a mini live album with just him and a couple of other people. Its amazing but you can only buy it from itunes.

You can actually get this from other MP3 retailers in higher quality, such as Amazon in 320kbps. It's also available at Rhapsody and emusic. The album features stripped down performances over a two night span at Triple Door. Shawn Smith joins for a couple of tracks, marking a reunion of sorts, since Shawn and Greg hadn't collaborated since the original Twilight recordings in 1997...as you may know, Shawn had collaborated (and even toured) with Afghan Whigs many times.

Difficult for me to pick my favorite Dulli records. I think it's a toss up between Whigs 1965, Twilight Blackberry Belle and Gutter Twins Saturnalia. The two original compositions on Adorata might be two of the most amazing songs ever written though. For me, just about everything Dulli has done since 1996 is golden, except for the majority of She Loves You - most of those covers don't work for me, which is weird since one of Dulli's superpowers is reinventing songs in the most amazing way (see: Down the Line and Don't Call).

Black Love has always been a favorite of mine, but the Gutter Twins album is right up there with it.

  • My favourite is '1965'. Hands down. No competition. And it was recently re-released as a double gatefold 12" by Dutch label Music On Vinyl (they specialise mainly on re-releaseing old Sony/Columbia albums, and only sell to retail, so you need to buy their releases from online or physical record stores). The 1965 re-release's second disc has all the b-sides. Class!

The recent Twilight Singers gig I attended in Glasgow was top class, too.
    My Pearl Jam shows: 1 in 1995, 2 in 1998, 20 in 2003, 13 in 2006, 3 in 2007, 8 in 2008, 5 in 2009, 4 in 2010, 5 in 2012. EV: 8 in 2011, 1 in 2012. Brad: 1 in 1998, 1 in 2002.
